Default Purolator/Mann fopaux

Was browsing an old thread about the Purolator L25277 filter being a repackaged Mann HU718/5 fleece filter.....

https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...il-filter.html

and I clicked over to Advance Auto to see if anything had changed as far as the price is concerned. Sure enough, it's still listed @ $11.99 + 15% off when ordered online.

Now here's the strange part - on the page showing the filter is a red box with a red "X" stating that this part does not fit the 2005 Crossfire !?!? I even changed the vehicle to the SLK320 and got the same result: "DOES NOT FIT."

http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_Oil-Filter-Purolator-Classic_22920080-P_1_R|GRPFILTAMS___#fragment-1

WTF.....that can't be right !!!

I know, it's strange for sure. Been using the Purolator filter for a couple of years now. The L25276 is the paper one that they advertise for the Xfire and the L25277 is fleece. Not sure why they don't want the public to know about the fleece. More money in their pockets if they advertised correctly.

Any system like this is only as good as the data suppled and who keys it in. The error could go on for years as the part will be ordered by people who know it's wrong and they will not tell the supplier of the error. Others will not buy one after being told it does not fit and go elsewhere.
You could tell a clerk but the computer is deaf to any complaint, progress I guess.

I just sent this to purolator (boschusa):

I am a long time member of all of the Mercedes Benz and Chrysler Crossfire forums. A question has recently been raised about the differences between your L25276 and L25277 oil filters.

As I understand it, both filters are dimensionally identical. The difference between them is the filter media, with the L25276 being manufactured of a “paper” material and the L25277 being manufactured using a “blown glass”, or “fleece” type material.

Both Mercedes Benz and (the now defunct) Daimler-Chrysler recommend, if not specify a filter made of the “blown glass” or fleece filtering media. Your “Application Finder” on your website returns only the L25276 filter.

This is in reference to the Mercedes Benz M112 V6 3.2 liter engine.

In my case, a 2005 Chrysler Crossfire Limited Roadster with the N/A 3.2L V6 engine (M112). But this question extends to all MB and DC cars with this engine from 1998 through 2008:

 1998–2004 C320
 1998–2004 E320
 1998–2005 S320
 1998–2003 ML320
 1998–2004 CLK320
 1998–2003 SLK320
 2003–2008 Chrysler Crossfire

I will phone your support hotline, but I expect they will merely read the catalog to me.

I look forward to hearing your answer to this issue.

Sincerely, Max Cichon

And, looking at the Boschfilters.com website, I found this:

72204 Oil Filter V6-3200cc 3.2L FI VIN L GAS
72244WS Oil Filter V6-3200cc 3.2L FI VIN L GAS

Here we find: two filters with no differences noted.

I'll email them and ask the same question with the part numbers changed.

Max

#UPDATE#

No email, but a nice young man will call me back with the answers.

First reply and my response:

Dear James,

Thank you for your quick reply. I used the tool you offered for both products mentioned and found that the ..276 is spec’ed for the Crossfire and other MB 3.2 liter cars.

Could you shed some light on the filter media question? Are they the same?

Thanks for your time, but many want to know.

Max Cichon

Hello Max,

We appreciate your inquiry. Visit our website at Purolator Oil Filters and Air Filters. Click on the "Where it Fits" icon on the right hand side. Enter L25277 and it will provide an entire list of applications.

Thank you,

James

And the Final Word:

Max,

The L25276 was used from 1998-2005. It has a 5k mile change interval. The L25277 was used from 2006 and up. It has a 15k mile change interval. The L25276 is manufactured with a paper media, whereas, the L25277 is manufactured with a fleece media. These filters are not interchangeable.

Thank you,

James

Well? Any one?

I hope they don't figure out that they can (or should) raise the price on the L25277?

My car is a 2004 and it came with a spare filter, the part #1-05102905AA is on the box, it is the same number as in the Crossfire Part Number Catalog. It is a paper filter and came in a Mercedes box with Mercedes part#A 000 180 22 09 on it, however the filter has Mercedes Part#A 112 184 03 25 and 306 HU718/4 (a Mann#) on it, it was made in Germany.

Part numbers from the parts catalog.
2004 - 05102905AA (paper)
2005 - 05143064AA
2006 - 05102905AB
2007 - 05183748AA

I have no trouble using a fleece filter at all, I think they are better and only a little more expensive if you find a deal.

I am afraid you will not get a reply from maxichon, he is on hold waiting for an answer to this question.
It actually has been so long he has forgotten what the question was anyway.

Can you even imagine how flat that side of his head is from holding the phone up there that long?
