Question Auto Shift Gear Indicator

I recently purchased a 2004 Limited coupe with an auto shift trans the problem is the gear indicator is blank regardless of gear selection.

Is this something that needs to be or can be activated by the dealer ?

It just seems weird to me that all other displays ie clock, odometer, tripmeter, idiot lights, etc, are working but not the gear indicator especially when it's backlight works so there must be power there. Come to think of it I seem to remember the 2005 auto shift I test drove before buying this one was the same but it was the first Crossfire I had driven and I didn't clue into the fact that the display was blank and shouldn't have been. Perhaps it's a "Canadian" thing but it's mentioned in the manual that came with the car so...

Any help or info on this would be appreciated because although it doesn't affect the operation of the car now that I know what the blank space is for it's driving me crazy the fact that it isn't working. And yes I did try a search but all that came up was guys with manual shift complaining that theirs didn't work either but as I said mine's a auto.

Thanks.

Hi
I am a UK owner (although spend 5 months per year in Florida) and new to the Crossfire Forum.
I purchased a 2005 Roadster Auto in October 2012 - quite a rare one I think as it has all the Startech embellishments factory fitted from new. Sapphire Silver Blue - 32000 miles

After purchase put the car in the garage while off to Florida. Just got it back on the road and noticed a problem with the gear stick indicator. When first engaging 'D' the car took a few seconds to move off (engine just revved and car did not move) Then noticed that the gear selection window in the instrument cluster lagged behind. For instance - put lever to 'D' from 'N' and noticed that the window remained showing 'N' about 5 seconds before showed 'D'
This also happened when changing from 'R' to 'N' - 'R' remained in window for a few seconds.
As a rule I do not use the autostick sequential gears - just happy to jog along in auto mode. However a few days ago I gave it a go and it worked fine. Today it will not function. Tap the lever from side to side - just remains in 'D'
Once on the move all is fine - and even better now we finally have some weather in the UK to go topless. Just a bit worried that something more ominous is lurking. Have only done about 200 miles since buying the car and up to now had no indications that anything was wrong.
Have spoken with local Merc dealer and they want the car in to do diagnostic check but it would be nice to have some practical advice from Crossfire owners
Any such advice would be appreciated
Thanks
Richard

Hi
I posted a message on 13/6 about this problem.
The problem was resolved when MB UK changed the transmission fluid plus all the seals etc. It was a costly exercise for what was just a fluid change - seems the fluid is very expensive here in the UK and MB labour charges the same. At least they did know what they were doing and i was just pleased that the problem was sorted without delving into the mysteries of the gearbox itself. They did say the fluid level was down a bit - that was apparently enough to cause the symptoms.
No problem since and had some use this year - summer finally came to the UK in July
Good Luck

Digging up an old thread.. no resolution to the "blank" in the selector indicator?
