Default How much Transmission Fluid needed to replace after filter change

I have a 2005 XF w/about 70K. I need to know how much Transmission Fluid should normally be in the pan when changing filter only. I've had the car since 2007 (bought used w/20K) I had not changed or checked ATF/filter. Drained the oil. Measured and had not quite 3 qts in pan. I know there should be 8 qts total, but since not all drains, I'm wondering "how low" can I guestimate I was with the 3>qts that came out?

I will probably end up buying a dipstick to be accurate, but in these tough economic times, any input/advice would be helpful

You do not need to buy a dipstick, the forum has the answer to this problem. I use a hose from the top sider I use for oil changes and others use a plastic tie as described by Woody Waldig. Basically anything will do as long as it goes down the tube on the transmission and keeps the true oil level showing.

I used a bunch more than 4 qts. I also overfilled it and found out that if it is too high, that it will pump it out on the ground, gee self regulating, great. Dip stick is good, but the temperature issues bugs me that its not just a level check. Enjoy Wdy

GOOD LORD! I took my car in to the dealer to let them check the level and to do an inspection. Turns out I had two codes p2098 and P0730. According to them, I have faulty K2 clutches??? and the rebuilt for transmission will cost about 10K!!! Anyone ever heard of this? I am still picking my jaw up off the ground. I told them I would come pick it up, but this sounds very scary.

Ask them when was the last time they had their calculator calibrated..

Print this out and ask them where the missing zero's are supposed to be.

K2 Clutch Assembly. Fits: SPRINTER 2500, SPRINTER 3500 | Mopar Parts

Disclaimer.. not "positive" this is "our" transmission.. but how far off can prices be..

There are LOTS of complete transmissions on Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market ranging from $300 to $2200

You could swap it out yourself. How hard could it be ?

You go in to get the transmission oil level checked out and they say the tranny is trashed, I'd tell them to go fly a kite and go somewhere else.
If everything seems OK and you are not going into limp mode I'd say you are fine.
P0730 code
