Default OBD Trouble Code P0410...

Hi All,

First of all, thenks to the respondants who told me just where the OBD-II plug was located under my dash! Duhhh. I shoul have looked closer

Now, I plugged in my OBD-II reader and switched on the ignition and got the trouble code back P0410 - Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction.

When I unplugged the OBD-II reader and restarted the car, the check engine light went out! I didn't reset the system, it went out on it's own......... I won't be surprised if it comes back on again also on its own!

So, I went online here and did some quick research on this and it seems like one of those error codes that can be caused by about ten thousands unrelated reasons.

Now, my issue is this: I have had this car in my possession for about 24 hours and have never yet added gasoline. So, who knows what grade gas is in the tank.... One of the reasons given on this forum that could in theory cause the light to come on is too low octane gasoline. Is this for real? I also read about a potential issue with a relay control module that could trigger the trouble code.

Can some of you who have the knowledge in this car give me a little background on this code and typical causes (and remedies)?

At the end of the day, the dealer is responsible to correct this check engine light (it is writen into the sale agreement) but I'm such a cynic when it comes to dealers that they might just try clearing the code and calling it a day rather than actually sourcew the trouble and fix it. So I would like to educte myself on this condition.

Also, I have to get the car inspected within 10 days of receiving my permanent license plates, and if the check engine light is on in my state its an automatic fail. So I have an incentive to have it off!

The car has been running PERFECTLY, no problems whatsoever so it is not causing any kind of issue. And I'm hoping this is not one of those things in which the dealer could **** things up even worse.

All said, what say you Crossfire experts??????

Thanks,
-George-

Look at the relay control module for burnt and seized contacts.
Look for a bad earth at the wire attached to the front of the air pump.
Does the pump make any noise when the engine is started?

Thanks for your input! I'll check to see regarding the AIR Pump however I can tell you it is not making any noise from what I can hear, of course they are really not supposed to unless they seize up. Re the RCM I'll keep that in mind but first I'm going to burn out the last of the existing gas and refill with either BP or Shell 93 octane and personally put on the fuel fill cap. I may also use my OBD-II reader to reset the computer and see what transpires.......

Stay tuned

When the air pump is working it DOES make an audible high pitched whine, this is normal. It should run for 20-30 seconds or so at engine start.
If it is not doing so, then pull the K40 ( RCM ) - module in the box by the battery, it is the one with all the fuses on top. Remove the plastic cover - (easier said than done sometimes ) Look at the relay on the end closest to the firewall, see if the contacts are badly burnt.
If so, you have 3 options :
1. try pulling the armature off the relay and filing the contacts ( this will last for a while )
2. replace the relay ( hard to find the individual relays, and hard to de-solder the old one )
3. get a new RCM / K40 - $$$$$$

OK thanks for the info. As I recall, I do hear that whine sound in my Jaguar when I first start it, so I'll be sure to listen for it when I start it up today, however I know art least with my Jag it is very quiet, almost inaudible unless you are looking for it. IF I don't hear it I'll check the ground connection on the side of the pump and then the RCM.

Bottom line is this is going to be the dealers responsibility to remedy, I'm just doing my diligence to make sure they do their part correctly.

As Ronald Reagan used to say, "Trust, but verify."
