Car stuck in Park Cannot Shift? BAS ESP Light on too
I have a 2004 coupe with 33k miles automatic shift. I just pulled into the driveway and the BAS ESP light came on. I tried turning the wheel to the left and right but light still appears. I also am unable to shift out of Park. Shift seems to locked somehow, would this happen when there is a problem with the BAS ESP? Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thank you.
Use the special tool, and if you dont' have it, use a small flat blade (small but LONG) screwdriver to unlock the shift.
I haven't had an auto for three years, but there is a slot you stick the tool in and manually free the shift.
Not sure why the BAS light would disable that shift solenoid...

Brake related input to computer? Since shift release is brake pedal dependent and BAS/ESP is "braking system"... ? Brake lights working?
The guy has not looked at the forum since 5.20 pm yesterday, I'm guessing he has solved the problem and moved on. Pizza man may have solved the problem for now.
Thanks Pizzaguy and everyone. I was able to get the shift out of park with tool suggested. Seems to be shifting OK but I intend to replace the brake light switch. Even the BAS light has disappeared.
