My Crossfire has a rough idle
Hi this is my first post here on the Crossfire Forum,
I have a 2004 Crossfire with 69,100 Miles on it, all stock no mods. Recently did the transmission oil/filter change as well as oil change.
HERE IS MY PROBLEM
My car has been having a rough idle lately so i decided to ask you guys who seem to know everything about theses cars before i try to take it to a mechanic, hopefully its something I can repair myself.
It seems like it has a hissing noise coming from the area where you fill up with power steering fluid. I think it could possibly be a vacuum leak, but I haven't been able to pin point it to a specific hose yet. Also my engines RPM seems to go up and down a bit, it is very small and barely noticeable, you have to pay close attention to the gauge, but its
there.
HERE'S A LINK TO THE VIDEO I UPLOADED ON YOUTUBE SO YOU GUYS HAVE AN IDEA OF WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.
ANY HELP IS VERY MUCH APPRECIATED! THANK YOU GUYS IN ADVANCE

At the front under the engine cover are the 2 air injection actuators, one of those could have a bad vacuum line, also check the entire length of the line that runs from the throttle body to the solenoid mounted on the driver side fenderwell.
It is not unusual to hear some hissing coming from the little covers on top of the valve covers, this is the MB equivalent of a PCV valve.
The small hoses from those covers also go to the throttle body, inside the covers are quite tiny holes that engine fumes are being sucked through.
( hence the need for a NeedWings 'Oil Catch Can' )

Thanks for your response ala_xfire. I just checked the lines from the 2 front actuators and they are okay, and also checked the lines connecting to the MAF sensor area, they seem to be okay as well. The hissing sound is actually coming from the area around the pulley under the power steering cap, is there any vacuum lines there?
So i scanned the computer using an OBD2 scanner and found these two codes
P0131 o2 sensor (Bank 1 Side 1)
p0137 o2 sensor (Bank 1 Side 2)
Is it possible that it is idling rough due to theses sensors not functioning, thank you again!

It isn't likely that both sensors went at the same time, look for a vacuum or air leak that would cause both sensors to read bad. This isn't my area of expertise, I never had this problem so how about one of the smart guys chiming in?
I took it to AAMCO for a free diagnosis and they told me this
p0131 o2 ckt. low voltage (b1s1)
p0137 02 ckt. low voltage (b1s1)
Just to mention as well i recently had a transmission oil leak through the electronic connector( ive seen it on the forum as a common problem) I recently got that fixed and was wondering if maybe the oil that was dripping could have damaged these two sensors? Because i really doubt they both went bad at the same time.

that hissing sounds more like a bearing in one of your pulleys....nothing to do with the rough idle or possible vacuum leak.... just what I heard....good luck
I AM IN NO WAY RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS POST !
I have read, here on this forum and elsewhere, that you can use a unlit propane torch and pass it real close to all the vacuum lines and connections with the engine idling. If the engine suddenly speeds up, BINGO !
If instead something goes wrong and the whole thing burns to the ground, see the above disclaimer.

Good way to find that bad plug wire that is shorting out too... LOL
The only problem there is that by the time you get out of the hospital......................!!!!!!!
i cleaned out my MAF sensor, still seems like the idle is still rough, i ordered a fuel filter and i found out my passenger breather cover is leaking, going to do that aswell. I think the oil got on the cables and is making some of them bad? idk how i will know unless i change the cables/spark plugs, I just hope this is my problem
Cleaning them doesn't always work, Could still be the MAF.

DONT TAKE THIS THE WRONG WAY...BUT HAVE YOU CLEANED THE FILTERS, THE ENGINE AREA SEEMS A LITTLE DIRTY. aND RUN A CAN OF SEAFOAM THROUGH THE GAS
I ran a bottle off Chevron Techron, still nothing happened. It's just a slight hickup the rpm goes up like 50rpm then comes back down to normal. Sooo frustrating because I haven't been able to figure it out.
How long have you had this problem? Do you always use premium gasoline? Do you do a lot of city driving with stop and go traffic? Have you taken the car on a long trip (over 200 miles) recently? I know this will sound mundane, but you'll want to weed out the minor variables before you start weighing in on more complex / expensive epairs. Heres what youve done so far:
- Transmission and oil change
- MAF cleaning
- Chevron Fuel Additive
- Fuel filter
- Faulty o2 sensor Exhaust leak near the rear sensor
- Plugged catalyst
- Short to voltage on O2 signal circuit
- High resistance or open on O2 signal circuit
- Engine running very rich or lean
- Engine misfire condition
- Fuel pressure very high or low - fuel pump or pressure regulator
Highly unlikely both of your 02 sensors failed. they are probably reading a code because your engine is running outside of what they can measure--either way too lean or way too rich. a MAF issue could do either of these, but probably wouldn't cause hissing. Vacuum leak could cause it to run rich and idle rough. Although honestly I know alot of crossfires tend to idle up and down a little bit, the electrical system isn't the greatest in the world in the car. Lights and AC load changes can definitely cause idle peaks and valleys.
I think they sell smoke generators to check for vacuum leaks don't they? maybe rent them? Perhaps some dry ice is a good idea, or some other way to make some haze in the engine, that's the easiest way to find a leak.
