Driving Habit - Putting auto in neutral at the lights
Hi all, when I'm stopped at the traffic lights I tend to put the transmission into "Neutral" thinking that it would take a slight load off the transmission but I stumbled on a Youtube video where it stated that you should not do that but instead leave it in "Drive".
Just wondering what does everyone else do?

I tend to put mine in neutral even though that's wrong cause my mind tends to wander when not driving and I have been known to relax my foot on the brakes.
People in front of me don't seem to appreciate that a lot, go figure.

You're probably not going to hurt anything. Your only real concern should be safety. Sitting at a light in neutral is an "out of control" situation. If something happens you lose the ability to maneuver away quickly. Keeping your foot on the brake even when the car will not roll away further helps you to control your car if someone hits you from behind. But don't feel bad if you don't do it. I fail in both the matters at times.
Your wearing out the clutches doing that , just no real reason to do that. At a light I have both feet on the brake, more safety for me and less chance of jumping before I really wanna go. Woody Enjoy
Thanks All!
Seems, leaving the the auto transmission in "D", with my foot on the brake is the go when stopped at traffic lights.

Hmmm, I've never really thought of putting the gear in neutral at a light but like others say.... It's a safety issue and that makes sense. And I do leave a little bit of distance between my car and the car ahead of me when stopped at a light in case I need to make a quick get-away from a carjacking situation or anything that would pose any danger to me and my passenger.
On-the-other-hand, I would sometimes, put it in park when waiting in a slow moving line at a drive-through like at Wendy's or Chick-fil-A, for other reasons.

If everyone left half a cars length between their car and the one in front traffic jams would be much longer.
