Exclamation Starter not cranking, computer reset fixes the problem

Last night my 05 Coupe left me stranded. When I tried to start it, the engine started running but then sputtered and died. When I tried to restart it, the starter wouldn't work. No click, nothing. All other electricals seemed fine. Jumping did not work, not even a click. I had it towed to my mechanic (Mercedes specialist) and he said that after pulling the battery to reset the engine control computer, it now starts. The only problem is, he does not have the equipment to read the Chrysler diagnostic codes.

Anyone else seen this? Am I likely to see this again? I'm considering taking it to the local Chrysler dealer to have them read the diagnostic codes, but wondering if there is any point.

Yea, take it to the dealer - that will fix everything.... (See my sigline.)

Ok, search "Mystery No Start", the engine control relay output from the RCM, if it fails, means the engine quits running and the starter won't engage. Sounds like you have what is about the most common "my car left me stranded" complaint on this forum.

And there are no codes to read when this happens, it is what the I.T. people would call a "layer 1" problem.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of any of the Chrysler dealers in town, that's why I found a Mercedes mechanic with a solid rep.
Thanks for the reply!

I sent a PM to you asking about the Mercedes mechanic since I'm in Austin, too. But mainly I wanted to say, if Pizzaguy tells you something, it's solid gold. I'd recommend reading all of his posts.

I sent you a PM, but very glad to share for others in Austin who might be interested.
I've been using Chuck the Mechanic:
Chuck the mechanic | Factory Trained Technician

Very good reviews on Yelp, and I've been very satisfied as well.

Plus one on this diagnosis.
Read this PDF CLICK for full details and repair of poor solder connections.
Look at the contacts on the relay as stated above, if they are burnt replace it.

Could you put into one post what exactly is wrong with the car?
What you have done and what caused you to write in the first place.
It appears to me that we have lost sight of your problems and confusion causes people to just give up and not reply.

To date, the problem has not yet resurfaced. When I get the time I'll pull the relay module mentioned about and try cleaning up the solder joints. In the meantime, if it happens again, I'll perform a reset of the computer by disconnecting the battery.

If he plugged in his SLK320 gear he could, Chrysler only added TPMS to the 170 chassis.
