Default Engine number Vs VIN Number

Hi guys,

When I bought my car the dealer, they told me the engine doesn't match the VIN number in any way, as the engines are sourced from Mercedes and their numbering is different...is this correct?

I know the engine is from Mercedes but is it correct that it doesn't match?

The VIN is the identification of the whole car and not the engine. Every position of the vin gives information about the car. Such as country of origin, plant it was assembled, type of car, transmission, body style, model year, etc. Only the position 8 gives information about the engine. It's L and means "3.2l V6 SOHC 18V". If you have any other letter you might have a 1.4l 12V from a VW. *lol*
