Hello
does anyone in southern Ontario ( besides the dealers) have the tool to do this?
I have a US car and I do not mind the miles and degrees Fahrenheit, it takes me back to my younger days.😀
I have the Micropod II maybe it can do the switch, but I would not do it anyway.40,000 miles
looks better than 64,000 k.
The main problem with changing a cluster from Miles to Km is that the central LCD (odometer) display must be changed. The LCD physically displays "miles" or "km" depending on its original type. It's not a programable/graphical display, so it can't display anything else. The cluster can be re-coded to record and display miles or km and Fahrenheit of Celsius, but you can't change that LCD display without swapping it. New displays are available, but the coding change isn't something that can be done by a Dealer or through Star, Micropod etc. It requires editing of the cluster's eprom file, and a knowledge of what to change.
Thanks for the clarification Andrew. Many years ago at my request I asked Rudy if Star Das could be used to change the cluster display. I watched as he changed the display from Imperial to Metric on his SRT6 roadster, the temp numerical value decreased to a Celsius value and the Odometer values increased to metric equivalents. At the time I thought the temp went from displaying F to C and that is still stuck in my mind, but now that you have provided your explanation I doubt my recollection that the "mi" displayed on the odometer went to "km". Funny how time and alcohol can play tricks on one's memory?
Don't get me wrong, it is possible to change your cluster, it's just not easy. If you want to change it, I'm sure Josh Chase (at the Mercedes Swap Shop) could do it for you. I know Josh and could tell him where to get the display from, and I'm sure he knows which codes to change. There's actually three displays that will fit, one has "km", one has "miles" and the last one has nothing. You could also find a good metric cluster and ask Josh to set the milage to the same as your existing unit.
BTW. For those that are interested. It's also possible to code any cluster for a 200mph/320kmh speedo range, but you'd have to get a different decal to go with it.

Don't worry, I've been tricked plenty of times. Especially when it involves Crossfires and a few beers.
