Default Automatic: Wont go back to Park

When engine is cold and I start it up to move it in my driveway, it won't shift back to park. It just seems locked in Drive and Neutral. Thoughts????

I refuse to own or drive a vehicle with an automatic transmission, so there are times I can't answer questions with confidence. This is one of those times.

But I do know there is a solenoid-cam that must pull back so the shift will LEAVE Park. A transmission that won't come OUT of park is usually due to failure of that solenoid cam to operate. I do not know if a failure in that cam can cause it to not go BACK to Park but I kinda suspect so.

Edited Title - the car is not a Base model if you have an automatic, it is a Limited, SE or SRT.

Pizzaman is correct. There was another post with the same symptoms and the solution in that case was a broken solenoid.

WOw, long thread.
But I did read to where the guy found it and fixed it:

Update, Mommas ride is fixed!

It was the solenoid in the SLA gone bad.

I received the replacement from ebay, $210. The first thing I did was compare it with mine, it was cleaner and identical. However, the solenoid on the new one was spring loaded and mine was not, so the spring in mine is broke. The spring action is what allows the shifter to return from neutral forward.

There was evidence of a previous owner spilled coke all over the place.

I dare to mention part numbers again, ahhhhh, but there are numbers on the solenoid, I don't think they are MB but just standard electronic whatever and maybe find one and fix the old SLA.

After finishing I had a few console screws left but its all done and good.

So add this to the list of fixes and thank you for all your help.
