As zip439 said pull the belt off and rotate all of them.
My guess would be the bearing in the "idler" pulley (the small pulley on the top of the engine) is going bad.
They are inexpensive and easy to replace.

Thanks for your responses, I just ordered a new alternator. Locating the sound with a screwdriver to my ear brought me to the dynamo. All other bearings of the various pulleys are okay.

As a simple test spray some WD40 or an equivalent on the belt while running the engine. If as you indicate all the pulleys are okay and the sound disappears it is your belt that needs replacing.
