Default limp mode nightmare

Please help. I am in Kerrville Texas. My 05 SRT6 is in limp mode. I just paid a guy $1300 to change the transmission conductor plate. He is telling me he has the mercedes software to clear the code and reset. The problem is not fixed. I asked him is it possible the new conductor plate he put in is no good? he said it would cost me another $1300 to find out. He is saying changing the conductor plate has not fixed the problem but reading these threads makes me wonder if maybe the problem is fixed but the software to reset is not working. Any advice would be much appreciated.

You need to either buy your own scan tool or find another "guy" to scan your car, Use an independent shop that specialises in european cars. Your Crossfire will scan as a Mercedes 2004 SLK 32 AMG

What were the Diagnostic Trouble Codes, DTC before you changed the coductor plate??

What are the DTC now ? And don't accept some terminology like the speed sensor is bad. GET THE number the DTC exact number.

PS you need to take a look at the Transmission Control Module. The TCM is located where the passengers feet rest. You should pull the carpet back, remove the piece of stryfoam and loosen three black plastic screws to get the steel plate out and you will find the TCU and several other modules there. Look closely for any damage that may have occured because of water getting to the electrical connecters. If you find corrosion or any thing that looks like water has gotten in there you have may found your problem

Thanks for responding. I just now ordered the Autel scanner which is recommended on here as working if i get the mercedes module. That will be in by monday so il try that first. The code i get is P0705 which is same code I got before the conductor plate was changed. Hoping its just a reset problem and not a bad conductor plate or something else.

A Fluid leak at the transmission can also cause fluid to wick up to the TCU under the passenger's feet. Where did you get the conductor plate and did the mechanic give you the old one? Where did the "guy" work?

P0705 is not a Chrysler code; It is Mercedes: Transmisiion Range Recognition Switch implausible or invald code.

Coupe or roadster ?? Has anything spilled on to the shifter ?? You definetly need to open up the footwell and check the condition of tthe TCM! Bad TCM or bad coding in the TCM will set that code, but usually from what I know it is caused by the SLA Shift Lever Assembly.

Start the car, let it warm up a little bit and them move the shift lever through all it's positions, PNRD and while in drive, foot on brake idling go + and - with the shift lever while in D. Maybe just maybe you can unstick the switch.

This problem may be bad electrical wiring or corrided connectors.

Hopefully it will correct when you clear the code, but I'm doubtful. Good Luck.

Who and where is the guy that did the work? If the same code is present, you may not have had to replace the Trans plate. Lets hope the TCM isn't physically damaged (water/corrosion) and the shift lever isn't damaged from a spilled beverage. Do the inspections Zip mentioned in post 2, and testing of the shifter in post 5 that Zip posted. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. I will try to reset with the new scanner when it arrives. If that doesnt do it I will check on the TCM and possibly replace it. That's stuff I can do myself. Carter's Auto in Kerrville. Ive used him before for mostly small stuff on my Xfire and a couple SLKs I,ve owned. Always been fair. I did see the new conducter plate and the old one after removal so I know its been replaced. Will update thanks again.
2005 coupe.

Thanks for getting back with us David!

Thing is a good number of people on the forum have had the P0705 DTC and almost all ended up replacing the SLA. That isn't a hard job. You can do it yourself, just watch a video and go slow.
Here is a link with several videos it should be helpful. Read the entire thread but the videos are at post #9 P0705 repair
Your best bet for a used SLA will be on ebay. They are all the same Limited or SRT6.
Good Luck.

Thank you to all who responded. the SRT6 is once again running perfectly. The Autel Diaglink $89 from Amazon did the trick where the "professionals" supposed $6,000 software didn't!! Something that might help others is it only worked when I ran it as autoscan after selecting SLK 32 AMG and going that route. It did not work when I selected transmission. When I did that it told me there were no codes to clear although CEL was still on. After clearing codes and restarting I immediately noticed the P appear and I knew the car knew what gear it was in and was probably fixed. Was a good feeling! Thanks again Zip and others who took time. The posts all help to get a clearer picture of what might be needed.
