Default cup holder

My wonderful cup holder will not stay down now and was wondering if anyone had any technical info on what exactly does this function? I have looked at it but see nothing obvious that is broken or malfunctioning. My XF is a 2005 coupe.

If you don't have any luck with getting it done free, take out the console, remove the four torx screws that hold the cup holder inplace and remove the spring that pops the cupholder up. Put it all back together and no more problems.

Ours took a dump too...Thanks for the TSB, we're going to hit the the dealer next week...

Is the new unit an upgrade??? I hope it just isn't another POS like the OEM.

Well I got absolutly no relief from my dealer as he wanted $350 to replace it and had no luck finding the replacement storage holder for it. I did get one though from the part number in another post.I was able to fix the cup holder for now when I was investigating how to install the storage holder. I did remove the spring and now it stays down like it should.

If the dealer is going to give me grief, I'm not opposed to removing the spring and just running with it. No way am I spending 350 clams to fix what Chrysler/MB screwed up...GRRR.

How do you get the the console apart?? Do you have to pull the whole center out or can you just seperate that cup holder section??

In reality I didn't have to take anything apart as I had just cut my elbow on the damn thing and was mad so I was going to replace it anyway. I just popped it from the side and it popped right out of the console. It appears to be held at the top by 2 pieces of plastic that fit into the side of the cupholder. These came right out and I removed the spring and was able to force it back into the indentations.

Try Ebay ! Someone had the storage bin on sale for 19 bucks ! I paid almost 50 at the dealer !

So you can pop out the cupholder without removing the console and drop in this storage bin?

Previous owner had cupholder replaced twice and now its broke again with me. I just laugh every time I struggle with it. That thing is soooo funny and over-engineered.

I guess theres just bigger things to worry about in life and in the world than a working cupholder? But if it bugs ya that much....

The console must be removed, there are machine screws which hold the cupholder in place. Do not try to break the thing out in pieces, you may crack the console.

With all the attention the Crossfire Cup Holder receives I'm starting to think it should have it's own forum.

Maybe CrossfireCupHolder.org or something...

Just do a search on Cup Holder, this subject has been beaten to death I think.

As with ahything like this try it at your own risk! Mine came right out when I hit it on the side of the extended cup holder. There may have been more done to it before I got it but I hit it more in retaliation for ctting my elbow than to try and fix it as I had already got the storage bin and was going to install it anyway. I still have the bin in case I need it but once I removed the spring the cup holder now stays down and I got one of those slide in next to the seat ones at walmart so I am good to go.

I may give it a try but if it only takes 15 minutes to remove the console I may just go the hard route.

mrphotoman,

Replacing the cup holder with the bin is a piece of cake and really does only take about 15-20 minutes to do. The part number for the Bin is 1BQ12XDVAA and it is $37.91 plus shipping from Chrysler Parts Direct. The bin went up $12 from last year when I replaced mine.

Here is the procedure:
  1. Remove trim plates around shift lever by pulling up and back.
  2. Remove the rubber cover from the emergency brake handle, use a little soap between the rubber and metal handle and it will slip right off.
  3. There are two screws at the front of the console and two nuts at the back (inside the storage compartment at the rear...pull carpet forward about two inches) that must be removed.
  4. Lift the console up from the front and slide forward.
  5. Disconnect any electrical connections and completely remove the console.
  6. Lay the console upside down (on a towel) and remove 4 torx screws holding the cup holder in place.
  7. Reverse the removal process to reinstall the console.

Got mine for $20 on ebay, then painted it to match the console. See my gallery.

Mine let go at my sisters funeral in Ohio so I had to drive back to Tn. with it in my way. The day after I got back I ran a long screw Thru the center console glove box into the base of the cup holder to lock it closed. It looks good now & I never have to worry about it coming open again
