Even if the cupholder was working as designed, it still doesn't work! 
Remove the console, remove the cupholder and replace it with the storage bin . . .

I don't plan to actually use the cup holder, I'm also trying to keep the car stock as much as possible.
I don't like it rattling around either, any ideas on how the system of springs/actual plastic cup holder is supposed to go together

The bin is your best bet, it is actually useful, cell phones, sunglasses, etc. If you want a cup holder, I have one but as Red Dog said they really never worked very well or at all. As far as aftermarket, I use a fold out one designed for boats, that I added a clip on assembly and hang
it on the bin. I have seen one from a BMW the looks great and it very unobtrusive.
