Default Storing for winter

I'm getting ready to put it away for the winter and looking at putting it up on jack stands. The "pad" provided under the car for the jack seems too small of a space for jack stands. How have you been doing it? If it is up on jack stands, there should be no need to remove the wheels as the manual says to do?
