Default SOLUTION for POOR 1-2 SHIFTS!!!

Now, I will say this: I have yet to try this TSB out, but Black SRT has mentioned this TSB, yet nobody seems to have noticed it. This TSB also seems to be exactly what the problem is. When I get back home, I will take the Crossfire to the dealer so that they can perform this service. Here is the link to the tsb:

Amazing! This must be a German thing because in the world of BMW motorcycles the exact same thing happens. If the transmission is hard to shift then one must perform the dreaded input spline lube, which is extremely expensive because the engine is a stressed member of the frame so they literally have to split the bike in two to do it. Its a $600 - $800 service is memory serves me correctly and BMW says to do it every two years or so.

Well, at this point, I could care less how difficult it is to perform...This will be the third time in the shop for a tranny problem. If the dealer screws that up, the car will be in the shop for the 4th time, which would mean that I could claim the car as a lemon. New car for me, and alot of money saved! We will see how it goes when I get the chance to take the car to the dealership.

I am not sure if my car would be covered on this if I shift fast some times I get that grind that the tsb explained. My gears are fairly easy to get into but when its cold it is harder to get in gear. What do you think I should do?

My suggestion is to just go to the dealership and get a mechanic to go for a ride. If the tranny grinds, then the dealer would have to fix it. Just don't mention that it occurs when you shift hard, because then they will blame the driver (you) for abusing the car.

Mine loosened up after time as the car broke in. It shifted hard when I bought it but every shift as smooth as butter now.

I have a 2004 LTD 6spd which I just bought ( 50,000km/ 30,000mi ) and I have problems sometimes getting into reverse or into first from stopped position. No grinding issues though. The first gear issue causes me to make sure I put the car into first every time with the clutch engaged as I roll to a stop.
Those TSDs are really interesting.

How many miles on your xfire? I'm still under 9000 and all that I notice is that I'm almost out of clutch. Still hard as always to go 1st to 2nd. Every other gear, up or down is smooth as can be. Wondering if clutch will give out before the tranny loosens up.

I have 22k on mine now... my shifter loosened up around 15k, either that or I got really used to the 1-2 shift, because I can do it seamlessly. Its still a little hard to get into reverse or first when cold, but thats a lot of cars.

BTW It's way easier to shift into first if you put the shifter in second before first.

I just bought my 06, 1500 miles on it now. I noticed that it is more difficult to shift from 1st to 2nd than any other gear, but I don't get a grinding noise, just a little harder to hit 2nd. Is this what you're all referring to?

Interesting question. I have an 06 roadster also, 2K miles. The 1-2 shift is harder than the others ( which are actually very smooth). It is difficult to get in to 1st at a stop (going to 2d before going to 1st does seem to help a little) as others have mentioned. And there is NO grinding noise at all.

I have just hoped that the shift would smooth out over time/miles. Anybody with higher mileage that has noticed a difference or found a mechanical problem?

I would like to know this also. Mine goes into first fine, but does have a harder 1st to 2nd shift...

I just bought a 2004 crossfire with 37K miles. Five days after I bought it, I sent it back to fix the damned air pump and still havn't gotten it back after almost 2 weeks. Anyway from my limited time driving it, I did notice it was difficult to put it into reverse. At first I thought it was just becasue of the retarded reverse lockout system of pulling up on the stick while pulling back which made it difficult. But now I see its not just me and is a problem. The 1 - 2 shift is also difficult although I notice no grinding noise at all. As for putting it into 1st gear initially, its just as difficult as any other car. 1st gear is always a tad difficult to get into when coming out of reverse in most stick shifts.

Although this could be a good thing. If my clutch fails prematurely I can point to this TSB and say it was a manufaturing problem and get a new clutch for free. As a wearable item they are not always covered.

I just got an 05 ltd 6 speed and I share the same issue. My 1 to 2 shift is the most difficult combination. All other shifts work fine. I do find though that it shifts worse when cold and gets better as the gear box heats up.

Cool Re: SOLUTION for POOR 1-2 SHIFTS!!!

I've got a brand new '06 6-spd - shifting has been like butter from mile-1 - FYI - I love this car!

argh this bothers me. I've lived with this hard shift for 16k miles now and the dealership will just tell me it's fine. Perhaps I should just print the TSB and bring it in and ask them to do it and see if it helps?

Been there 3 times over it.. they must seriously hate me.

Mine pops out of first gear and makes a grinding noise when it pops out. I have had it in the shop twice but they always tell me that it works fine for them. It pops out for me so often that I have been skipping 1st gear most of the time...

Anyway, any chance this is the same problem? I don't really have a problem shifting from 1-2 though.

My problem was the 6 speed transmission. Since I'm an old fart and always had a five or four speed it took a lot of getting used to. My son visited and commented when we went for a drive, " having trouble shifting into second? I have the same problem with 6 speeds, you need to remember that it is always trying to go to center which is third and fourth gear." After I thought about what he had said, I realised that was my problem. I needed to remember to pull into my hip not straight back. I now have 17,000 miles on my '05 and also find that the shifter has loosed up a bit. I hate it when he is right. lol By the way, in my last visit he put me in the wall at the go cart track. Sucks getting old, I hate letting him win.
