Default Useless Autotrader

Put my Roadster on Autotrader (UK) week before last for £5950 and have received no phone calls and only 2 phishing emails (that I complained about) - £36 well spent I don't think. I could understand if it was overpriced or one of many but there are only 24 for sale in the whole uk, only 2 of which are cheaper, only 5 within a 100miles of which mines the cheapest. Not sure what the problem is? Trying ebay next but I'm not holding my breath

In Canada all Autotrader "online" ads are free. I look after a business fleet and sold two trucks on Friday through AT and it did'nt cost anything. My ads were posted for one day. It works well for us here.

Online ads are free but if you do the print ads and run for the minimum number of editions it costs us about that as well.

This was online only for 2 weeks - unfortunatley I think putting it in the Canadian version might involve a lot of postage for the purchaser

LOL Yes, I wouldn't suggest that. Good luck with the sale.

I also find AutoTrader "useless" when I don't get a single enquiry about a car I'm trying to sell. But somewhat strangely, I always consider it "excellent" when finding a car, or when selling one out it.

Thats fair comment. I would have been praising them if I had loads of calls even if I didn't sell but no calls and 2 phishing emails? Not impressed if it was free never mind for £36. Perhaps I've done something wrong but if I have I'm not sure what it was - cheapest for miles around and not many for sale?

I had mine on AutoTrader.ca and I had many scammers and no serious enquiries. I listed it here as well and I sold it to a forum member who never posted much when he had one and wanted another one. I'm glad it went to someone who knew what he was getting.

Is it the grey one?? If so perhaps a bit more wording/description about the car might help (I dont know)
Have you tried it on Pistonheads??

Wasn't really sure how much to put - after all I'm only a phone call/email away. Must admit I haven't looked at Pistonheads for a while - good idea

To be fair, it's not AutoTraders fault your car did not sell. The only reason it did not sell is, the price you asked was higher than anyone was prepared to pay. You say on 24 for sale, yes Grey ones!! but there are a total of 115 (when I looked) for people to choose from and that's the ones on AT, many more for sale elsewhere.

I agree its not just Autotraders fault - theres just not enough people with good taste out there but I was unhappy that they forwarded two phishing emails to me. Just seems like a waste of money.
There are 115 Crossfires for sale but only 24 Roadsters of which mine is the third cheapest, and there are only 16 on ebay of which - guess what - only two are cheaper.
Whats wrong with Graphite (grey sounds common ) best and most popular colour - certainly better than pus yellow

I don't necessarily think that you can blame Autotrader for not selling your car. I sold my BMW Z3 through Autotrader last year and waited almost three weeks for a phone call. Within a couple of hours I had a second call and sold the car to the first person who viewed it, but did take a hit on the price The advert was descriptive, listed service dates, history and was detailed, complete with the maximum allowance of photos.

Don't forget that it is not quite roadster season and times are hard and people don't always have the money to spare.

The Crossfire can hardly be described as a mainstream choice, can be costly to run and repair and parts are increasingly hard to come by. With fuel costs reaching all time record prices (1.43GBP per litre (6.50GBP per gallon) for Unleaded in my area), big engined uneconomical cars are going to become increasingly hard to sell. There is a limited market for these cars and patience will be, in this case, a virtue.

If you are desperate to sell it, perhaps you should think about reducing the price. After all, the value of a car is not what you think it is, but only what someone is prepared to pay for it.

I'm not in a panic just thought it was a bit crap. Have to say this sort of car is niche thing and I'm not sure fuel prices are relevant as they were never cheap to fill, and I've never had trouble with any spares I've needed. Also you'll make our American cousins think we are whinging about nothing on the fuel price - I think its more like $8 for US Gallon

I'm not whining, just stating a fact, but I think that your estimate of US fuel prices is a bit wide of the mark;

Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Update

If I could by petrol at that price, I'd sell my diesel hatch and buy a Crossfire, too.

I'll agree that parts for the engine/transmission shouldn't be an issue, due to the Mercedes link, but having waited over six weeks last year to get a key, which is to be fair, is an everyday item, does give me case for concern. I was told by someone at Fiat Head Office, that they had one customer waiting almost four months for a replacement key with the vehicle off the road for the entire time, due to difficulty locating some spares.

As the model is no longer in production and with little factory support due to the change from Mercedes to Fiat partnership, I cannot see the availability of spares improving and our reliance on breakers to source some of the more rare components increasing.

O/T a little here -but wouldn't it have been easier for the person above to get an SLK key set from a dealer and/or breaker and do it that way?

Not sure you understood - UK unleaded would be the equivalent of $8.17/US gallon - I know its much cheaper over there and obviously that would be nice here, but I fear next weeks budget won't help there
All irrelavant to whether Autotrader is crap or not - if I sell it tomorrow I will sing their praises but I don't think thats likely now.
All niche low production run cars are pricey to run and sometimes tricky to source spares, some much worse than Crossfires, so I can't see why that should make any difference to whether Autotrader is a good investment. Seems that 115 people had the same idea as me, I wonder how many of them were lucky? If I had the time I'd ring and ask
