Those rear cats were installed mainly to deal with the required emissions for California here in the States. If anyone knows different, chime in. There are quite a few owners here in the States that have removed them and passed emissions testing in their respective states.

I would be interested in this as well. I don't know which is stricter the USA or UK emissions tests.

Only a handful of states have annual emissions testing.

Arizona is every two years and they go around the car with a big mirror on a stick to see if all the equipment is underneath. It could be a risk to try and pass here missing cats.

I wouldn't call 32 out of 51 ( including Washington DC ) "only a handful"

A few are bi-annual though.

Huh, really?
Didn't know it was near that many.

A mirror is easy to get around, 4x4 trucks we used to gut mufflers or slide a pipe through the mufflers.

But, that doesn't get them out of the way.

For those of us residing in SC (or having cars registered in SC), routine annual inspections of any form ceased in 1995. SC meets all Federal clean air standards so emission testing isn't required here and never has been. And routine inspections for mechanical and/or electrical issues was always a rip off. Back in 1983 & 1984, all my vehicles failed the initial inspection for headlight alignment. Would cost me an additional $30-$50 fee to have the service tech state that the headlights were re-aligned. But, I will tell you that not having routine annual inspections means there are a lot of "really weird cars" on the road in SC!

But for me, the best perk in SC is having only a $300 maximum Sales Tax on the purchase of a car. Even though the State Sales Tax Rate is 6%, on a car it can never exceed $300! How 'bout that!

You're likely to fail the MOT (UK), been told the rear cats must be there (visible).

if it's grunt you're after upgrade to 3 inch pipes from the rear cats.

I put an X pipe on mine and ran dual 3inch pipes to a dual intake Flowmaster Super 44 and the sound is great IMO.

I think most tests like this insist on all the OEM equipment being in place for the tests, that depends on the tester knowing what was there in the first place though. A neat and tidy removal may slip through whereas a messy hack job would stick out if the underside of the car was looked at.
