Brake Fluid DOT 3 or DOT4+
Need some help. I want to flush and replace the brake fluid in both my 04 and 06. The 04 Service Manual states (5-9) for manual bleeding use DOT 3 and for pressure bleeding use DOT 4+. The cap on the master cylinders say DOT 4+. I assume I should use DOT 4+ and that there is an error in the manual calling for DOT 3. I plan on doing the manual bleed starting with the RR (right rear), then the LR, RF and finally the LF. Can anyone shed some light on the discrepancy. Thank you in advance.

Thanks 180 and JHM2K. I just looked at the 05 SRT6 manual and your right, no mention of DOT3. Must be an error in the 04 manual. Thank you for the clarification. Something must have got lost in the translation from german to english.
The others have already answered, I've always used Dot 4. Factory fill, 2 changes of ATE Blue and now I'm using Motul 600. I overheated the factory fluid once which is why I changed in the first place. Only hard core racers need more than the factory Dot 4.

Les, perhaps you can verify, but the ATE Blue fluid is banned from auto-x tracks due to the dye, right?
That's what Steve told me last Saturday at least.

I've never heard of that! I've raced with it and one of the things they check is the brake fluid to see if it's clean and full. In P.R. the rules are not as strict as SCCA or NASA but I've also done driving schools with the PCA and if you don't have a Porsche and if they're short instructors they try to find a reason to keep you from running. I had ATE Blue and I passed.
Now I'm curious myself now, but I think it must have been a local thing.

It's racing fluid and racers use it but I found this at Tirerack.
NOTE TO FLORIDA RESIDENTS ONLY: ATE Super Blue Racing Brake Fluid,
due to its blue color, cannot be registered in and is not DOT-approved
for street cars in Florida.
Sounds like a Florida only issue.

I use Dot 5 silicone as does the US military and post office.. Flushing never required. Non hydroscopic. No water in the brake system. ergo, no rust. No negative action on my ABS. It destroys the after market for calipers, wheel and master cylinders. I use it in my cars and motorcycles. You have to remove every last vestige of Dot3 or4 when converting. It is not compatibile.

Gary. Do you use it in the MGA too? Did you rebuild the master and all the brakes before using it? I really did not want to rebuild all the seals on my old cars to use DOT5. Thanks.
PS Nor do I think I need DOT5 BUT DOT 4 would help with paint issues.
