Default Problem with my fuel door. Help!

This is hard to describe, and I don't do the photo upload deal, but I'll try to describe the problem...
After fueling up, I couldn't close the fuel door. The inside of the door has a long plastic thing which was bumping in to a metal pin, preventing it from closing. I'd never noticed ANY of this stuff heretofore, because there was never a problem.

After futzing with it for a minute, I was able to press the metal pin out of the way and get the door closed. The thing that concerns me now is: This pin looks like it's capable of popping up and holding the door shut.

What's going ON here?!?

It may be a "bug".

You can't close the lid if you lock the car... that pin sounds like what locks the lid in place so that nobody can pop it open to siphon gas.

I had that problem once. When I got out to fill up, I instinctively locked the doors. Since the gas door wouldn't open, I unlocked the car with the remote. This allowed the gas door to open, but since I didn't open one of the doors within the 45 second window, the doors automatically relocked. The gas door then would not close until I unlocked the car again.

I'll admit it, I did this and was laughing at myself afterwards. The thing about it though, I never lock my doors when I'm gassing up, so maybe that's what threw me off.

This has happened to me twice - the last time this past week. In my case, I had put the key fob in my front right pocket like I always do. When I put the nozzle back in the pump, I must have bumped the fob in my pocket, locking the car. The first time I did it, it really threw me, but now I know what I'm doing to cause it.
