No ... they are not hooked together, the grills pop right out. You have to grab the middle of the grill and pull on it they should pop out you may need to get a screw drive between the outside edge and the lower bumper (be careful not to scratch the car). that's what i did with mine.

The lower grilles are designed to be removable to permit access to the "towing eyes" for towing. There are some useful graphics in the "towing" section of the owner's manual, FYI.

Cool Re: lower grill

Use the "Multi-Tool" just stick it into the hole and find the inner tab and the grille will pop out, as diagramed in the owners Manual.

Don't pull on the grills near the center of the car. The grills hook into the bumper piece that divides the grills. The grills snap into the bumper on the far outside edges, that is were you need to pull/unsnap them.

There is a hole the grille, insert the tool into the hole and there is a clip that the tool will fit into then pry to the right and the grille will pop out. There is a diagram in the Owners Manual.

While I was removing my grill, I noticed a skinny probe sticking out on the right side grill. Does anyone know what that is?

~ it is the outside/exterior temperature sensor.

Well, I guess we learn something new every day. With the sensor's proximity to the engine bay, however, I have to wonder whether that positioning might influence the reading in some way.

being where the sensor is located... it is more inclined to receive slightly inaccurate (higher) reading due to the heat of the asphalt... more so than the heat of the engine... being that it is so low in the front bumper.

When I first got my XF, I made it a point to check the accuracy of the exterior temperature gauge. I would note the temperature when I pulled into the garage and then I'd immediately go right to the TV and the weather channel to see the local reading at the nearby airport. Each time I checked, I was shocked to see my gauge was impressively dead on.

Agreed. And I can tell you that the summer pavement in Arizona can get very, very toasty indeed -- often 30 to 40 degrees hotter than the ambient air temperature, which isn't particularly cool to begin with.
