Default mystery wire by fog light

My driver side fog lamp went out so I took the wheel off to inspect it through the access door in the fender well and I find this wire and plug (?) just hanging in there. Actually it was laying on top of the splash guard. ..anybody know what it is and where it goes? There is a place on the back of the black bumper insert behind the license plate that looks like it plugs into but I dont see what good that would do..

It is the temperature sensor. The hole that you are referring to is the correct mounting place.
