It's not so much a waste of time but you get two threads answered by different people and the tale gets split into two.

Found myself dancing between 2 or 3 threads at on point trying to help a new member.. "it does this" in one thread.. "it does that" in another.. etc.
Decided it wasn't worth my time trying to track it all down and resolved to my re-run of 2 1/2 men..
