Follow the advice of our seasoned members. Dont be a cheapskate when it comes to maintaining your vehicle. Trying to save money NOW will COST you in the future. Its your choice. PAY NOW or you'll PAY LATER. Follow the manufaturerer recommendations.

This is a Mercedes SLK320 dressed in a Chrysler skin. Dont treat it like its a POS or it will quickly become a POS.

Well...If you want to get technical it's 8.5 qts of Mobil 1 0W-40 synthetic oil. Yes, it requires premium fuel. No, don't be cheap.

OK, I yield. If you need to ask then use only synthetic and premium. Guess why is unimportant here.

If I thought the mfrs were all knowing then I never would have replaced the 2bbl on my new SBC 67 Camaro with first a Quadrajet and later a Rochester FI. Did win a lot of autocrosses with that car (was too young for SCCA). Been playing with cars and computers ever since.

I wanted to point one thing out - my pickup only cost $35 to change the oil in, and that was having a shop do it. But that change lasted 3000 miles. With the Crossfire, depending on how you drive it, the FSS will advise you when to change it. It starts out at 7000 miles. But if you driving is such, you may see, like others here, more miles than that.

So, is it REALLY more expensive than my pickup was? Some, but not as much as you think.

It will be a cold day in Hell before my oil and filter goes for 7,000 miles. I have put about 28,000 miles total on my two Crossfires and the oil and filter has been changed thirteen times. Ten times on the NA and three times on the SRT, which reminds me ..........
It may be a waste of oil, but I don't care.

FYI
https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolisten/229.3_en.html
https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevol...229.51_en.html

1) 229.51 oils may use a paper filter with pre-2005 FSS
2) Certain 5W-30 oils are approved (for warmer climates)

Note: certain Mobil 1 oils are not approved:
Mobil 1 SuperSyn 0W-30 SL/SJ/CF A1/B1/A5 9.7
Mobil 1 SuperSyn 5W-30 SL/SJ/CF A1/B1/A5 9.8
Mobil 1 SuperSyn 10W-30 SL/SJ/CF A1/B1/A5 10.1

I think that the viscosity is important, just because an oil is on the standards list does not mean it is recommended for use in the Crossfire. The preferred viscosity is 0W-40.

Fleece filters are for the longer oil change periods, quality paper filters would be fine for short periods.

Agree but depends on where you live. From http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r129-sl-class/1498948-2010-mercedes-benz-approved-engine-oils.html

My 2007 Limited Coupe has just over 15k on the ODO. Car had 1500 miles on it when I bought it in 2008. I've changed the oil 2x since I've owned the car, with the last oil change back in JAN. The 7k interval is fine considering the quality of the oil (Mobil 0w40 European Formula) recommended by M-B for typical driving style. And I use the fleece-style oil filter element, which is recommended for the longer mileage interval.

Of course, driving habits can dictate the oil change interval with some doing this service at shorter timeframes and some doing it at longer timeframes. To each his own.

Later,

You'll not get much support from fellow XFire Owners regarding gas octane grade to use in the XFire. M-B recommends premium for their 3.2 Liter V6 and for good reason. Can you run lower grade gas in the XFire? Sure you can, but there is always a risk. And, in the case of the XFire, which isn't well liked by either Mercedes-Benz or Chrysler dealers, having to get any engine repairs addressed resulting from a lower octane gas being used isn't worth the risk IMHO. I, along with others, will tell you that if you can't afford the gas, then you shouldn't have bought the car.

I'm convinced you're going to really enjoy the XFire you purchased. We call it "perma-grin". It is infectious!

Enjoy,

dedwards is right, but I usually change mine at 5500 to 6000.

I bought the car knowing what it was going to be like owning it, many here warned me - and it was fine with me.

Echoing what others have said here. Stick with a trusted oil recommended by MB (Mobil 1 0W-40 for the most part) and 91 or better octane for the gas. Your car will thank you. You are welcome of course to use "dino" oil and 89/87/85 octane in your car as some have suggested, but you may not like the long term results. I for one have stuck with Mobil 1 0W-40 and 91 or better for gas for all of my Crossfires that I have owned and I have yet to have any issues with the engine.

if you want to continue to enjoy your car long into its life, stick to what is recommended by the manufacturer and what the board-tenured gentlemen here tell you. They have working XFires for a reason and they have yet to steer me wrong.

ok, all you guys ragging on me about oil&gas...in my 70+ years and 30+ cars, have learned that maybe all mfg's recommendations aren't necessarily necessary....don't mind using synthetic and 93 iaw your recommendations...that's why I asked you for your learn-ed opinions...

Am constantly reminded of what Will Rogers said around 1935: "The problem's not what people don't know, it's what people know that just ain't so."

The owner's manual does not require "premium", it requires "91 octane" and includes a graphic showing they are referring to PON and not Research or Motor method.

As to why, the answer is probably the same as for what oil to use, EPA (or European equivalent) testing. To be accurate they should have also said "91 octane below 2,000 feet and above 80F" but that would have required a chart.

Mobil 1 0-40W oil, 93 octane fuel... have used these for 10+ years...no engine issues... see no need to "experiment"...Carl

No reason to use anything other than a full syn 0W- or 5W-40. I have 46k on my roadster with no issues. Both cars have their oil/filter changed in the fall before winter hibernation, and neither really do more than 4-6k of driving per year. I generally alternate 1/2 tanks between premium and mid-range on the n/a but I use exclusively premium in the SRT6.

I also have 227k miles on my 2003 Audi A6 2.7T (bi-turbo) and have used Mobil 1 0W-40 exclusively every 7-8k miles. Still runs fine although the turbos are starting to leak a little. I think that is a decent testimonial to syn oil.
