Default Tire Size

I thought 285/35's fit on the rear of our Crossfires. When I went to Discount Tire, they said to go with 285/30's, because the 285/35's rubbed. I did as they suggested.

Now, I'm having second thoughts: Should I be firm in requesting the 285/35's or are the 285/30's basically the same? I mainly want more tire width since my new wheels are 9.5 inches wide. I haven't picked up the tires yet.

use the calculator :
https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...calculator.php

You will see that the 30 is 1.12" less diameter than the 35

Insist on the 285/35/19

Discount tire has mounted 285/35/19 twice on my Crossfire with OEM suspension with no issues at all

here is your answer,
rear ---285/30-19 = 11.2 wide,, 3.4 from ground to rim,,25-7 tall smaller than stock.
rear----285/35-19 = 11.2 wide,, 3.9 from ground to rim,,26.9 tall good fit without a lowered car.

rear----255/35-19 = 10.0 wide,, 3.5 from ground to rim ,,26.0 tall stock size

Place to check is with the suspension at full extension (jack at frame point until tire is off the ground). The suspension geometry moves the rear tires forward about an inch when jacked. Look at the clearance between the tire and the wheel well at the front. Every car is a little different.

Uhh....Everyone knows installing a taller tire on the rear will "slow" your cars accelleration right?
I mean if you're OK with that, by all means fill up the rear wheel well because it looks great, and it will cut your highway RPM's a bit.

My 275/35xr-19 Nitto INVOs fit the rear of my lowered car just fine, no rubbing. The 285/35-19 BFGoodrich KM2s I had on before rubbed slightly when hitting large bumps forcefully (ie hauling ***).

rear----255/35-19 = 10.0 wide,, 3.5 from ground to rim ,,26.0 tall---- stock size
your 275/35-19 are 10.8 wide,, 3.8 from ground to rim ,,26.6 tall---- better ride than stock
--------------------------------------- x.x --the more from ground to rim the softer the ride
a very soft ride, & would fit would be 18" ----for the rear 265/40-18 10.4 wide,,4.2 tire 2 rim ,,26.3 tall
here is a list of tires that fit ,,nothing under 26 tall and nothing over 26.9. jim

-255/35-19 = 10.0 wide,, 3.5 from ground to rim ,,26.0 tall---- stock size

Thanks for some great input!
I think I will insist on the 285/35's for a softer ride. The 285/30 is lower than stock (tire to rim) and while I get the width, a softer ride is also desirable. I only hesitate because MoparFreak69 did have a slight problem with rubbing on the 35. But, I will try it anyway! Y'all were VERY helpful. Thanks!

I do want to point out, the rubbing only occurred when cornering very hard at about 45 through a dip, which is in a shortcut on the way home that I basically have to jam across a very busy street to even have a chance at making across.
I did not have it occur any other time, not even on 2 long distance trips with a ton of luggage in the back.
I am lowered about 1.5" via a cut coil.
I should also point out that i noticed the rubbing before I bought and installed MikeR's camber arms. I never noticed it after that, so it could have been entirely due to being lowered and the extra camber, vs extra tire width.
Either way, it was just a quick rub on the inner wheel well that cause no damage and wasn't any concern of mine. I went with 275's purely on price, being $35 a tire cheaper than the 285's from my source.

I think you will be very happy insisting on the 285/35's

No problems, I have a srt-6 I have enough power to overcome it.

For you guys running 285s? I just put 275/35/19 on the rear, and noticed when I put the wheels back on the car, the tires rubbed at the bottom front corner at the rocker panel. They rubbed enough to take some effort to spin the tire by hand. When back on the ground they were fine, but I never heard anyone else mention this.

And I think next time I will go with 275/30/19. The 35s look like to much side wall to me for the car and have completely changed the look of the car.

Didn't have a problem with the 285's I ran at all. I have heard of that in some threads, but didn't encounter it in my car. Would be interesting to find out where the differences are and why they fit some cars but not others.

Bill - I didn't know you had oversized on the front. I think I'll stay with stock on the front and go with the 285/35's (like yours) on the back.

Bill is my Crossfire Guru and has never steered me wrong yet! It seems like the cars are temperamental about tire sizes...so we'll see. I really prefer the 285/35's, so I owe it to myself to at least try them! I truly appreciate everyone's input.

The acceleration is immaterial to me. I don't race. I gave it up for Lent.
