Default My solution to the cup holder problem

I just made two cup holders, maybe you might find this useful. I may polish them or paint them to match the interior, I also made them a little wider (not much) so I can put padding on the inside so it won't scratch the interior.

I went ahead and painted them trim black and added the foam to the inside.

That's where I used to put drink cups in my old Viper GTS, (it had a pouch that would hold them pretty well).
Never even thought about doing what you did in the Crossfire. Great idea Dave.

Thanks for the compliments, it's pretty simple to make, and easy to custom fit to whatever your favorite cup is. I used an inch and a half aluminum so it would be stable. I like the foam on the back which was an after-thought. It's a little inconvenient reaching back but it beats putting your soda between your legs and it gets it out of the way in a car that is a little limited on space. And it's not bolted on, easy to remove. Sometimes a simple idea works pretty well.

I made one for my dune buggy, just a hoop over the hump in the floor pan with two cup circles, I didn't even need a bottom for that one, the floor is the bottom. You can put it where you want so it's not in the way.

Hi Ken,

No plans to make or sell them, it's so easy to make, and almost any welding shop will tack on the cup part to it. You can get the aluminum at any Home Depot Store. Bend the main piece with a vice which is a no brainer, and the cup part is easy to bend too, I used a thinner piece of aluminum and clamped a pair of vice grips on one end and wrapped it around a pipe. It's a nice and easy project to do on a Saturday morning. The foam part was that stuff they use under a camper shell, sticky on one side, inch and a quarter wide.

That's a great idea and I must admit at first I thought it looks a little "raw" but after painting it looks real nice. I have seen a lot of good suggestions on the forum in regards to cup holders but just haven't made up my mind as to which one to use. Driving 4 hours last night from Miami to Tampa made me realize that I definitely need to put a cup holder in very soon!
Since I'm not good at welding I have though about getting this one here at Walmart and simply sticking it in the little bag that is right where yours attach to (fits perfectly as I have seen from a different member) and would serve the same purpose as yours:
Sew Many Ways...: Tool Time Tuesday...Cup Holder Sewing Caddy

Only problem, it is a little awkward reaching behind your shoulder while driving so the spot is not ideal. But then again it's absolutely right that a spilled drink would do less damage than a drink spilled over the console and into the electronics!
I'm still a bit mad that they didn't use the cupholder from the Mercedes SLK 320 that pops out below the A/C vent on the middle console! Would have been a lot better than the pesky little thing that pops out where your arm is supposed to rest while driving!

Yeah, it's not the most ideal location, but it's also out of the way and fully secure. You just need to reach with your left hand. You can also make it any size you want, customized to fit your favorite drink. I doubt if I will use both very often, having only one up could make it a little easier to reach. I'm just glad I have somewhere to put my drink, as I'm sure you will be too, once you decide which direction you want to go.

Thanks,
Dave

I made this cup holder before I purchased a Roadster. Since the one originally listed here will only fit the coupes, I altered it a little to fit the Roadster. I'm sure others might have a better idea but this works well for me and is easy to make.
