Default Gas Cap Malfunction

Can't find anything about this.
Unscrewed gas cap, pumped fuel, but was then unable to replace cap and tighten. Cap has two metal flanges and a white plastic ring - are these out of sync and won't allow me to replace and seal the fuel port.
Thanks on info on how to fix this.
Tony

with a rag grab the inside and turn the handle ,,when the two line up put the cap back on the car. it may be hard to turn but it will turn. mine did that years ago and the gas cover would not close.

There are mainly five common malfunctions cause the check engine light to come on, and several of them are simple to fix yourself.

Replace Oxygen Sensor
Loose or Faulty Gas Cap
Replace Catalytic Convertor
Replace Mass Airflow Sensor
Replace Spark Plugs and Wires

None of the problems you state - it is just that the cap won't screw on.

Thanks AMX 1397.
The rag didn't do anything but I raised up both metal flanges with screw drivers wedged in below and then rotated the white plastic housing to seat into the depression. That worked. Now the cap will screw on, tighten and click.
