Think I need to bleed my Brakes ... need confirmation of fluid
Think I need to bleed my Brakes ... need confirmation of fluid
I have noticed for the passed month that my brake pedal pressure has softened (hopefully just air in the lines}, and feels better after 1 pump of the peddle. My Crossfire has about 55000 miles on it and new pads put on about 6000 miles ago. I'm very confident about the shop that I'll go to, but I want to make sure that they use the proper DOT 4 (mb331.0) brake fluid. I realize that the whole system needs to be checked, but if only a brake bleed is done, are all the DOT4 fluids compatible with each other, (barring a complete flush). The prudent action would be to just evacuate the system, and check everything, but I'd like to save the bucks. There appears to be no leaks anywhere, Appreciate your coments

Howard, You could have air in the lines, but doubtful if they have worked fine until now. Just keep in mind that I have read here that some brands of brake pads give you the same feeling.
I believe some pad material expands when hot. Then the material contracts once the car sits and cools. So the first time you step on the brake on the next drive, the caliper pistons must move further to take up the space, causing a low pedal feel on the first application.
Just something to think about if nothing is found in the fluid system.

I'm on the same page here with the 05 and 06 roadsters.. to clarify a little.. apply brake - release and apply brake when stopping is the only way to get a "full" peddle
04 still has a great peddle - but while I'm servicing the other two.

Re: Think I need to bleed my Brakes ... need confirmation of fluid
Thanks James and Greg. My peddle is like Greg has. One pump and peddle is firm again. This happens even after traveling a short distance, then have to pump again. James .. I understand what you're saying, but the pedal does not stay firm even when warmed up.
So ... will any DOT4 brake fluid be compatible to add during the bleeding or should I get the MB brand (331.0) and bring it to the shop?

Just my .02 cents here. I've found that not all DOT 4 performs the same. So it's a long story but basically when I changed my brake system I bought the ATE Super Blue fluid. My motorcycle takes DOT 4 as well and I figured since it is a high performance bike and others have had good response with the Super Blue, may as well replace it too. I did so, had a good brake, then after sitting for a few days, no brake and air in the lines. This continued for months and people kept saying I didn't bleed it right/enough. Eventually I figured it couldn't hurt to try another fluid, bought some cheap Valvoline DOT 4, installed it and not a problem since. This relates to my car too, but like I said, long story.
Bottom line, it has led me to believe it is better to go back with stock and I've been thinking about putting the MB fluid back in my car to see if it give a more firm peddle.
