Default Door locks 04 coupe

Hey guys dad just gave me my 04 crossfire and I've had a few things to deal with. Got most of them resolved but I am stuck on this. I can not get my doors to lock with the interior lock button unless my car is on and the doors are shut. He told me to replace the batteries in key fob, but for some reason they do not register with the car and i am still forced to lock my passenger door by pushing the lock down. He said I have to have fob reprogrammed? Is that true. I just want to be able to lock my doors when I'm outside of the car (like when I walk to class and want to lock my car to avoid my subs being stolen)

That new battery might be the solution to the interior button.. As far as the fob - press the lock or unlock button on it twice.. insert key into ignition and turn to on/run position. It should now be synced back up.
