require 8 quarts of engine oil??? I realize extra residence time in the oil pan would give the oil more time to cool, but with only 215 HP it's not like this is a big HP engine.

It's because it's a Mercedes.
Not intended for the unwashed masses, cost is not a concern, so why not ?

The larger pool of oil provides more of a buffer against heat, but it also provides more dilution for contamination - they can then claim longer change intervals.

Now, if 8 quarts is just too much for your budget, I'd wonder what you will say when you find out how much you are going to spend on tires with one of these cars. But, feel free to run the car on 6 quarts - from what I gather in the manuals, the engine is apparently safe up to two quarts low.

Of course, I'm not going to do that, but I have no problem suggesting someone else do it - I'm that much of an *** these days.

No, really - I am.

This too, shall pass! Have been through a few of these stages and predict in October, around the 20th, another will kick in. Until it passes, just try counting to 10,000 (to yourself)...

When you're used to having to install only 5 quarts in a car (from the good old days), having to add 8 liters (or quarts for many of us) can be a shocker. My 2006 F-150 4.6L engine takes 6 quarts. Unlike pizzaguy, my recommendation is that you follow the recommended oil change requirements & avoid having to replace an engine. Oil (even Mobile 1) & filter are cheap maintenance compared to replacing an M-B 3.2 liter.

And as pizzaguy has stated, these cars are operating under a 7k mile oil change interval, and the 8 liters is a factor in that interval.

Yeah, I know. It is a milestone for me though. Are you saying all will be back to 'normal' with you after the Dragon this fall?

I too was surprised when I found out this little powerplant required @ 8 qts oil (the @ symbol because ppl just cannot lock the exact qty as firm both in the manual and all the personal posts here in the forum, for years). I just pour enough in to about 8 qts, then check the stick making sure it isn't too low NOR too high.

Well, SOME cars are. None of my three Crossfires have gone much past 5500 miles between oil changes.

It will always get to the same temperature eventually, 8 or 5 liters, it will get to engine temperature.

I wonder if it is just because? You know, the name, MB? 8 qts, nose snubbing elitists who don't care about the value of a $? Guess I'll never know...

I do own one, love it, and will continue to put 8 qts (+/-), because it is required to be between the min/max marks (and I want the anuses at FCA to continue to fix any powertrain problems that come up until they say no).
