Well the time has finally arrived to take the journey to pluck out the Nieces Crossfire.

Started to get my tools together. Got everything for the oil change. Plan on pulling the RCM to resolder the bad joints. I'll do some shakedown drives then pack it up to head home.

GPS says 900 miles, 13 hours.

Stopping at the Bank on Tuesday.
Picking up the rental Thursday night.
Leaving for Jacksonville Friday morning.

Just a bit nervious, but going forward. I do have a backup plan.

 

Many of us carry a Crankshaft Positions Sensor (CPS) with us all the time. There are several write ups on the subject, just use the search box.
Enjoy the ride! I find the car very comfortable for the long trips, but I'm kind of a small guy. 500 ~ 600 miles is my target per day. Plan and book ahead for your motel rooms and you'll save a tidy sum vice just walking in and looking for a room. Use cruise control and you will get 28 to 30 miles per gallon on a limited; I'm not sure what an SRT-6 can get.

Driving straight through from Fort Lauderdale to home some 1,500 miles or so my son and I found the SRT could pass anything on the road except a gas station.

Received the crank position sensor Thursday.
Got most everything gathered to put in rental car (tools / parts).
Maps updated on GPS.

What else?

 

Go pee real good before you start out, clean your glasses and put every tool you own that will fit in the rental car, then the Crossfire.
You never know.

Check inside edge of tires, high camber they could be thin.
I drive out of state every week.
I carry a fuel pressure gauge and a mechanics stethoscope in my tool box also.
I have a spare cps and tools to change, but still running on factory cps with 136,208 miles.

O, and the torx, inverted torx, 5 and 6 point.
When I had to change water pump in hotel parking lot I was glad I had my 5 point inverted torx.
But mainly, take a look over as with any new car to you, and have fun and don't worry about it, just enjoy the drive.

Haha, next time drive a lifted 4x4 and then you will look at your srt and think.
Damn the srt gets good milage.

If you get tired you can always pull into a rest stop and take a nap. That is, if you are able to nap in an upright position since the seats don't recline very far.

 

My son managed to sleep in the car coming back from Florida, He managed to sleep and I could not, the result was that he had to drive the last part of the trip as I was too tired and in danger of falling asleep at the wheel.
I felt that I could drive but after just five minutes the road seemed to hypnotize me and I knew I had to quit. When I got home I slept for twelve hours straight.

 

Why I have a good radio, long drives every week

 

Starting to pack the rental. Rental is some Hyundai Sonata boring yuck car, so I'm already to "Crossover" to the Crossfire!!!

 

I find that anything you have a spare for won't break. Have also noticed that the Crossie is a very cool running car, in 180-190 range usually. Generally have to reprogram a car for that and everything under the hood lasts longer.

Is part of the reason I modded my interior (sawzall, cut off tool) for a reclined seat to go back 2" further, find in that position a 1,000 mile day is easy. Also have more and better sounds on phone than on satellite.

 

OK, I have arrived and touched the Crossfire.

Keyfob doesn't unlock the doors (suspect battery in fob), but not sure. It's too late to open door with key, so I'll do so in the morning.

Will alarm sound or mostly grind until the main battery is dead? I may have to unplug this until I get it home.

I'll keep posting as I discover things.

 

If the alarm goes off, the car will not start.
What is the point in having a key lock in the door, if it can't be used ????????
I have a 97 dakota the same way, if doors are locked, only way to unlock is with fob, if use a key, the horn goes off and truck will not start.

Could be just weak, walk around the car pushing the button???

 

OK, Saturday morning.

Unlocked drivers door with key and opened. OK.

Put key in ignition and turned to "ON" position. Course, radio and A/C was powered up (shut those off).

All seemed OK to start. Went ahead and started. OK - running.

Let run five minutes, tested wipers, spoiler, radio, A/C and rear defrost.

* Unable to open trunk ??? * I can hear the electric switch solenoid moving but not unlocky.

Gas door can open - Good.
Tires check - OK.
Lights check - OK.
Driver seat moves - OK.
Cup holder - OK, not broke - OK.
Full tank of gas - OK.

* Cowl is loaded with leaves * - will need to clean when home.

Continued investigation underway.

 

Maybe the fob just needs to be synchronized, try using the door key. Do not put imaginary problems in your way.

 

I pulled the RCM, dude, this looks new and does not need any re-soldering. Relays appear new as well. I'm leaving this alone.

Some of the wiring to the relays have tape on them - I suspect a previous fix???

Cleaned the negative battery post.

 

Can the CPS cause intermittent stalling and delayed starting?

I'm thinking of replacing it as a safety precaution.

 

When replacing it, unscrew the bolt, lift the CPS and carefully unclip the connector to it. This would be better than trying to unclip it while the CPS is still in place, you do not want to break that clip.
Also where is this tape to the RCM, inside the box or outside?
If the trunk does not open and the doors do not open then the CLP/SSM in the trunk is out of commission. Maybe water in the trunk has ruined the CLP/SSM, or the plastic air lines have broken.
Your lucky the gas cap is still open.
