Default Cranked/fired 3x, then nothing

Posting this in the general section, since I do not think it is specific to SRT6s. SRT6 (33k miles) ran fine two nights ago, on a 50 mile round trip. It has been on the road and driven regularly since early May.

Last night it fired right up, then died immediately. I could hear whirring. It did it two more times and then on the fourth attempt, nothing. It did not turn over. Code reader showed no codes. Battery is strong/fairly new. I even tried the second key - nothing.

Searching brings up: 1) ignition issue which appears to be the key not turning at all. It turns fine and all the icons on the display light up normally; 2) RCM module - maybe this is an issue but does it match the above symptoms; 3) Crankshaft Position Sensor - no codes and would this prevent the engine from turning over?; 4) Other??

Appreciate any advice that I could try before I have it towed to the shop. Thanks in advance!

Other would be the dreaded SKREEM module failure.
Search for that, 3 tries then no more is the classic symptom.
Rudy at NeedsWings can now supply the Skreem module.

It may be as simple as a broken/loose wire to the antenna ring around the ignition, we can only hope.

Disconnect the battery for a couple of minutes and try it again. If the same symptoms repeat (the three strikes and your out syndrome) then it's more than likely the skreem
module.

It is a classis SKREEM module symptom BUT before you fork over the bucks, check a few things like the ring wire and do a search for other possible troubleshooting techniques. If you eventually have to fork over the bucks, you at least tried other options. The bad part of this jumping right in for the replacement SKREEM, is that if it isn't said SKREEM, you have spent bucks on throwing parts at it. Once the SKREEM is ordered, it is only good for the VIN it was programmed for (unless) there is a procedure to 'recode' it. In other words, just sits on a shelf. Good luck in your endeavors!

When I had issues with the SKREEM module, my lights and dash would light up, radio worked.

I'm not sure if this deepens the mystery. Based on the comments about the SKREEM module and disconnecting the battery, I did just that for a couple hours. She started right up and idled fine - twice. I'll take her out for a short ride tomorrow but I am a little scared of a no-start away from home.

Based on the above, any ideas or new suggestions??

Your not the first one to "get lucky" like this.. seen it before and never noticed them back with "help"...

Yesterday I took a 15 mile ride without incident, and she started right up while hot immediately after the drive. I went out today and she started right up when cold. So I replicated my Sunday-Monday no-start situation without a repeat.

At this point I'll start cautiously driving her again. Since I generally go on 25-40 mile trips, I am concerned about being caught away from home. I suppose I can mitigate it by taking along a wrench for the battery clamp bolt and trying the disconnect trick again. If you see a graphite SRT6 in a parking lot in southwest MI with a short guy next to it cussing, it's me. Please stop and assist.

another solution : get AAA with extended towing, you can specify a flat bed as opposed to towing.

I've had AAA for 17 years and used towing >5 miles only once. I dropped the premium package (extended towing) a few years ago. Fortunately I had the 100 mile towing when I last needed it and it was about 60 miles, so there were no charges. They flat-bedded my SRT6 (I told them no towing) about 5-6 years ago when it blew a plenum plug. I am about 7 miles from my indie shop, so if I need it towed from home it would only be $10-15 surcharge. With three drivers and my wife's car covered by Lincoln for another year, it's just cheaper to take the risk. When her MKZ goes off coverage, then it will make sense to buy the premium since her car is the one we use the most for long distance trips and the two 2005 XFs are not getting any younger.
