Default Front wheel bearing question

I took my SRT6 in to get a new set of tires and a four wheel alignment.

I was told that Crossfire bearings are prone to premature wear and that if the wheels are loose on the hubs then the wheels cannot be accurately aligned....which of course is true. I was told my front wheels are loose on the axle.

What I am questioning is if Crossfire wheel bearings are more prone to premature wear than most cars? My car has about 105k miles. I have had plenty of other cars whose wheel bearings were not worn out at 105K miles.

Would shaking the front wheels tell me if I am being lied to or not? The wheel shop wants $500 for new front wheel bearings and an alignment. If they are a little loose, would it be okay to snug the wheel nuts down a little so there is no more shaking?

If under 100K, a bit of snugging should do the trick, unless everywhere you have driven has never been in a straight line

If it is slight, then could adjust the nut in some.
to replace bearings, races, seals and a good high temp grease from napa would be probably around $40 - $50
your shops price is the labor, but if they have a good press and the tools, it should take them very long.

the races and seals are pressed in, but with a freezer and a oven and a seal / race driver ($20-$30, guessing on amazon) and a hammer you can put them in, the tricky part is packing the bearing "right"

on your other vechicles they are probably sealed non serviceable bearings and just umbolt and bolt in a new one.

doing it the first time might scare you some and get aggregated, but after you finish your 1st you would be fine doing any others after.

but would 1st support car off the ground, then put a jack on the lower control arm and lift the tire up some loading everything, them shake the tire side to side and up and down check play, and spin and listen.

just alittle and yu could tighten up some, or atleast tighten up till you get time and ready to change.

I would not trust them too much, if you cannot hear the bearings they should be OK and they might just need tightening up. Test them as described.
Pack them with grease as best you can.

Thanks guys. I have decided to spin the wheels and listen for noise. If no noise then I am going to tighten the nut just enough for any slack to go away. If there is noise then obviously the bearings will need to be replaced.

There is a specific amount of slack required, see the Service Manual for details.
