Do XF engine and motor numbers match?
Happy New Year! I did a couple of searches on this forum and on Google, and couldn't get confirmation if the Crossfire's engine number and VIN are supposed to match. I saw one article that said the number is on the back of the engine on the right (assuming driver?) side of the car. Another one said they won't match because it is a Mercedes engine. Please advise!
Thanks,
Terry

The "engine number"??? If you are asking "can I put the engine from another crossfire in my car without changing the computer crap?", then the answer is this:
If you are not changing from N/A (Limited, Base) to SRT (with supercharger), then there is no concern. An M112 engine, in an M112 engine - the ECM only knows what's going on based on sensor inputs from the engine - not on any serial number/VIN interface.

Thanks Pizzaguy. I should clarify. I am still searching for a car. It's not a good time to test drive a convertible in the upper midwest. :-) My previous experience comes from motorcycles and older cars (Buick and Pontiac) where the vehicle is worth less if the engine and frame numbers do not match, implying a replacement engine was installed at one time. Is this something I should look at with these cars? If they don't match from the factory, it's not an issue!

Anyone who has changed an engine in one of these cars, has put a V8 in there.
The M112 is really solid, I've lost count of how many of us are past 200,000 miles and I know of two that are past 300,000 miles - with original timing chains, even.

Once the chain starts jumping gear teeth or breaking you are in for a quick lesson on major engine repair.
In the early 90s I had an 87 450 SEL. AT 90 some thousand miles the plastic tensioners on the timing chain came apart and the pieces got in between the sprockets and the chain. Several valves got bent and had to replace the heads. Arizona is a great environment for bodies but not so great on plastic parts.

I was in Atlanta and I was talking about cars to a customer, I said our Canadian cars suffered body rust and he said their interiors went to hell. Out of two ten year old cars we could make one good car. 😀
