Default Leather care

Hey everybody!

Do you guys do something to the leather seats? I think I read in the manual you are not supposed to use anything on the leather but a damp cloth. Just wondering what I should do to keep them in good shape.

Nick

I tryed a couple of products and then I found this Meguiars Gold Class leather cleaner/conditioner. Have been using it for 2 seasons and I think it works great. The seats are soft, shiny with a pleasant smell. I have a black/black roadster with the top down whenever driving and my seats look like brand new. This product works Great.

My seats are white with grey. I used Fantastic and a soft brush to clean mine up from alazy previous owner. I then followed up with Mothers Leather conditioner.

OK, a quick update...my neighbor showed up (he's a very nice guy) and brought out those Meguiars Leather Wipes...sure enough he put them on both seats and the results are not what I want it to be...I'm afraid I screwed up both seats. They look very shiny, greasy and it seems the wipes left streaks behind
What can I do now? Is it too late? Will that stuff eventually wear off??
Any advise is highly appreciated! Damn neighbor!

I use the Meguiars cleaner/conditioner in spray bottle, never have seen any streaks , however I wipe it down with a micro towel. If you don't like that look or feel don't worry it will wear off, or try some mild soap with micro towel. You didn't do any damage, and I have been told it is good for the leather as far as preventing cracks and dry rot. Good Luck

The product in those wipes is essentially the same thing in the trigger spray version of Meguiar's Gold Class Leather Cleaner/Conditioner, which means it's a water based product. Given that, you should be able to take a clean terry cloth towel, soak it in very warm, almost hot water, and wring it out. Now wipe down the seats with the warm/hot damp towel and dry with a fresh towel. You may need a second go over with the damp towel, but that should remove virtually all of the product.

I've never been a big fan of wipes of any kind, but the consuming public demands them so we make them. Gold Class Leather Cleaner/Conditioner in either the trigger spray or pump bottle gel is really good stuff though. Applied sparingly with a microfiber towel or applicator pad and worked thoroughly into the surface on a regular basis will keep the leather soft and supple for years. We also have a new dedicated Leather & Vinyl Cleaner and separate Leather Conditioner, both in trigger spray, that are pretty awesome. I don't get excited about interior products, but doing demos on these two for AutoZone, Advance Auto, Pep Boys, Amazon and Canadian Tire I was repeatedly blown away by the cleaner. It just flat out works. Even on seats we thought were clean (like, embarrassingly enough, my own daily driver) it pulled a ton of dirt while anything we put it up against - Lexol, Purple Power, Auto Glym, Mother's - did virtually nothing.

So you suggest to get the cleaner and what else? The conditioner maybe? How often should I used any of that?
I looked at the seats today and they look a lot better. I guess that stuff dried out and now they actually do look moisturized and a lot softer!

The cleaner really only needs to be used a couple of times a year, maybe more in a roadster with the top down a lot (like mine ). The conditioner should be used once a month, and a light treatment is all that's needed. Don't get in the mindset that so many do - if some is good more is better. That's just not the case with care car products. Maybe if you're talking about cash in my pocket, but not car care products.

Mike - Thanks for the info. What should I do now? Do I need to remove the residue from the wipes and then get cleaner/conditioner and treat the leather? Or should I wait a couple of weeks till the stuff wore off and then treat it?

On a second look, the leather really does look better already from the wipes. The person before me did not take care of the seats and so they were real dry but not wrinkles or cracks fortunately!

The wipes make it a bit tricky to evenly distribute the product, IMHO anyway, so you get the appearance you mentioned. Once the excess dries back it usually looks OK, as you're discovering. Since you bought the car used, I'd give the seats a once over with the cleaner, then apply a light application of the conditioner and take it from there.
