toxic bird in the neighborhood
I don't have the luxury of a garage so my car is exposed to the elements, no big deal since i wash and wax it so often. I have been sick for a week and a bird plopped a quarter size bomb on my hood. It was probably there for a couple of days before I noticed it, long story short it is etched into the paint and will need to be professionally repaired. I rubbed it , polished it black wax, it disappears and then shows the following day. Does anybody in my situation use a car cover on a regular basis. I have a real good felt lined one for the winter but was thinking of getting something for the summer to prevent this from happening again. I have been told that the cover would do more damage (paint rubbing )then it would prevent. Is there a safe, lightweight easy on/off cover for a roaster to use in the summer?
I have bought two car covers from Car Cover World. They were for my MR2. I bought the custom fitting kind, instead of the one that fits any car. They are not waterproof, but they let the car breathe. Great defense against birds. There are different kinds; indoors, outdoors with lots of sun, long term storage, daily use, etc.
My MR2 is white, so I have not seen any scratches, but I think a car cover is the way to go. Make sure it is tied down and secure when the weather gets windy! I use it every day. Very easy to remove and put on the car.

Good luck getting that bird bomb fixed.

What did you rub it and polish it with? If just a wax like the Turtle Wax Black Box stuff it's not going to come out at all. You should be able to remove it by hand using something like Meguiar's Ultimate Compound and a foam wax applicator pad.

Was it purple by chance? some deamon dropped a purple duke on my hood and ultimate compound as well as the one from the new microfiber kit won't do anything to it using the porter cable. Gotta look for it in the right light/angle but the mark is still there.
yeah bird crap is very acidic. I had a white infiniti and came home one spring and the car was covered from bumper to bumper with birdcrap and purple berries. Apparently they would eat these berries and then not be able to digest them...
Rub the area down with alcohol first, make a paste of baking soda. Put the paste on the spot, donot rub, just let it sit on the spot at least 45min. Clean the area again with alcohol, being careful to not rub the dried paste. If you rub it it will scratch. Now use some 1500-3000 grit compound. Put a good wax on the whole area being very careful to get all the compound, paste, etc. off Polish it up that should neutralize the acid in the bird droppings. Find the bird and make sure they don't come back!
Let me know if that cures or helps the problem.

dtinker- that is some interesting procedure. How did you come up with that process? I hate that bird stuff - makes looking for shade in a parking lot a real gamble. Alicia
I used to own a franchise called " TIDY CAR" that did paint sealants, detailing, etc. Bird droppings have a lot of acid in it. The baking soda neutralizes the acid. The alcohol just cleans the wax away so the baking soda can contact the acid. You need to leave it in contact for a while so it has time to go into the paint. Hope it will do the trick.
roctech;
Did you have a chance to try my fix for the bird droppings on your car? The faster you neutralize the acid the better. It will just keep burning the paint if you don't get it all off. Let me know if it solves the problem.

Glad it worked, get it in shade and do it again and let the paste soak into the paint. The baking soda is a miricle product. Soak it for about an hour if you can, spread it out to a larger area that the spot. This will allow it to get the acid out. Great stuff.
