Default Thinking of buying a Crossfire.

I have been looking at a Crossfire today and was thinking of buying one.
I have also been looking at an SLK.
I found them both very similar to drive.
The thing is I can get a Crossfire less than a year old for around £20,000.
However I would only get a 4 year old SLK for the same money.
Now I know you are all going to be biased on here towards the Crossfire but why should I buy one?
Have any owners had any problems with the car?
How do you find the car to live with everyday and what sort of MPG do you get?
Plus how much do you pay for servicing, new tyres etc.
I noticed it has huge wheels on it.
Also does anyone know if you can get a CD autochanger for it?

Oh I'm in the U.K.

Sorry for all the questions but it's a lot of money to spend.

Thanks.

Norrie.

Q. Have any owners had any problems with the car?
A. Yes, you should view the various sub-forums. Most have been resolved but the car is not flawless.
Link to car problems
Link 2 to car problems

Edit: These might be more dealership related problems but I guess if you can't get your car worked on it doesn't matter how "good" it is!

Q. How do you find the car to live with everyday
A. I absolutely LOVE it, it is awesome to drive in varying conditions

Q. and what sort of MPG do you get?
A. There is a poll, I'll link to it once I find it. Around 19 MPG w/auto
Link to MPG poll

Q. Plus how much do you pay for servicing, new tyres etc.
A. Warranty... nothing yet but you've picked up on an expensive item. Tires DO NOT buy them from the dealer!

Q. Also does anyone know if you can get a CD autochanger for it?
A. Yes but you have to buy the more expensive navigational unit.

Comments:
The SLK's are very nice, my wife has a 1999 SLK230 and she loves it. My only comment is for the same money you can get a brand new car or one that is four years old. I'd go for the new car. The Crossfire is more MB than it is Chrysler.

Good luck

BUY the Crossfire. Buy the Crossfire. Buy it, buy it buy it! Not that I'm Biased. buy It!

>> I have been looking at a Crossfire today and was thinking of buying one. - don't think. Let that visceral homosapien natural desire to hunt and kill take over and buy the Crossfire.
>> I have also been looking at an SLK. - ahh, whatever!
>> I found them both very similar to drive. - Because they are virtually the same car
>> Now I know you are all going to be biased on here towards the Crossfire but why should I buy one? - what us, biased? Buy the Crossfire.
Have any owners had any problems with the car? - Nope. I have a standard trani and its a little ornery when its cold, but once warmed up its like Butter! Or should I say Buttah! Buy the Crossfire.
>> How do you find the car to live with everyday and what sort of MPG do you get? - Love the car.. crappy MPG... Don't care. Buy the Crossfire.
>> Plus how much do you pay for servicing, new tyres etc. - Aww Pshaw... its only money! Buy the Crossfire. It might be slightly cheaper to service than an SLK. Buy the Crossfire.
>> I noticed it has huge wheels on it. - The better to chew the road up with. Need I say it? Buy the Crossfire!
Also does anyone know if you can get a CD autochanger for it? - Don't know. Buy it anyway.

Smile Re: Thinking of buying a Crossfire.

We had a 2001 MB SLK 230 supercharged, with AMG exterior upgrade plus other goodies. It constantly had a problem with the overheat light which they kept telling me that it was the computer. (Do you think that MB techs are any better than Chrysler techs?) I took it in 5 times and it was never fixed. I got 30MPG on long trips averaging between 70 & 75 MPH. It was a fun car.

Once the 2005 MB SLK came out we were mesmerized for a while until my artistic wife saw the Crossfire Ltd Roadster. We looked at the price and decided that the MB SLK was too much. The retro rag top, chopped and raked was more of our style having grown up with the 60s autos including a 1963 Stingray split window coupe. Will never regret the decision to buy a Crossfire ltd roadster. Nothing to get used to. Going from a SLK to a Crossfire was natural. The crossfire handled better and had more guts. Our serial number is 39001, and we haven't had one problem. Can't tell you about the gas mileage yet, however, with a V6 it has to be less than the 2001 SLK supercharged 4 banger.

I may be wrong, but it appears that some of the problems that people have experienced were with the lower serial numbers.
Get a Crossfire

norrie, I live in scotland. if you live in Scotland do not buy from Murray Motors in Glasgow they ended up breaking bits on my car to repair other minor things.

Tires. Rears are £225.00 each. Bought from Drivers in Glasgow that was with balance and fitting.

Fuel I get 270 miles to the tank full. Spend about 50% of my time on the motorway. Its a auto.

if you are going for the coupe it will be easier to live with everyday as there is more boot space.

Old SLKs did have a problem with a leaky roof.

CF is faster than the merc and handles better

CF is a new model Merc is now outdated. (with regards to style)

Merc may have written off most of its depression, CF my fall a bit more.

Really have to watch those allows on a CF.

At the end of the day the choice is up to you.

I put my money into the CF as the looks won me over.

Thanks for all the replys guys.

I think I will get one but what I am going to do is book the car for a 24 hour test drive.
That way I can take it for a long run to see how I get on with it.

Before buying your crossfire...check with the dealership first on how good they can fix it! Most dealers that I went to just sucks in service. They cause more damage than repair....that's just my very honest opinion.

What problems have you had?

If I ask they'll just say they are good at servicing.

Skip the XFire !!

Get the MB, thou I like my XF its has plenty of short falls I wished I new when I got mine.

*Very little on accesories and mods
*Radio is a half breed
*Lack of good techs
* Almost imposible to get anyone to do anything to it

And with the new Firepower coming out, I am sure DC will forget about the XF real quick !

I'm actually discouraged on how the dealers treated our cars. As for my XFIREX, i love it that's why it irks me when the dealer's techs don't know how to fix some of its problems like the wind noise and doors popping. I brought my XFIRE for wind noise 3X and the popping door 3X and it's not fixed...warped my door handle surround and my amp rack is making more rattling noise because they've been messing with it probably to blame it for the popping noise. And that's 3 dealerships in my area!

So, there's really nothing to criticize the car 'cause its a great car...it's just these freaking dealership services that ain't worth my time and money.
