Help! Factory Navigation Install Problems!
Hello Everyone... I'm in great need of help...
I purchased a factory navigation setup from one of the forum members. It came with the following:
Navigation head unit
GPS Antenna
East/West CDs
Manual
I removed my old head unit, mounted the GPS Antenna, ran the wire and reinstalled the new head unit. I turned on the radio and everything seemed to be just fine. All of the radio features work great. I inserted the navigation CD and it recognized between 6 and 9 satellites. However, when I drove the car, the navigation feature was worthless. Every destination I entered, it would try and take me in the opposite direction. It wouldn't recognize any roads and wouldn't recalculate anything. Also, the compass was never facing the correct direction. For example, I entered my home address as a destination when I was about 3 miles from home. It said "calculating route" and then listed the street that it thought I was traveling on. However, it was not correct, in fact, I was about 4 miles from the road it listed on the display. Then the voice said "turn right in 100 yards." I kept driving all the way home and it never changed. Something isn't right with this, and I'm not sure what it could be. One member told me that he had to install a "speed sensor wire" and a "reverse sensing wire," which I did not do -- maybe that could have something to do with it? Any help, advice or suggestions would be extremely appreciated. Thank you in advance!

blacklimitedcoupe,
Sorry to hear about your nav unit. I bought my SRT-6 with nav unit and have the same problem as you. I am currently working with Chrysler to get a refund for the unit as it is completely useless. My wife drives a 2006 Pacifica and the nav unit in her car is incredible. Hope someone on the forum can help with this.

You need to connect the speed sense wire (is located at the factory radio amp) in order for the system to know that you are moving. Reverse wire is not 100 percent needed but is recommended, this way it knows which direction the car is going. Once that is done you need to calibrate the unit to the car, this can be done by getting into he calibration mode and driving approx 1/4 mile and then making a 90 degree turn and repeating the steps until the system calibrates. Manual calibration is not 100% but you will need to know things like tire diameter and such.
Another thing to remember that many people are not aware of with many points about nav systems. Road names are not always what you know them as. The mapping is based off a database supplied by the town/city. For example a road near my home is known at rt 38 (just ask anyone here ant they will all tell you that is what it is) but the road is actually made up of three different roads before it became rt 38. The nav system shows this and so do the township maps as there are addresses still based off those roads.

UPDATE: with the generous help of IAMFINK2, I installed the speed sensor wire and everything seems to work perfectly now.
It sounds like the unit has some interesting "features".
The speed sensor and backup sensor suggest to me that it is using some dead-reckoning in addition to the satellite signals. And probably has an electronic compass.
Usually this is so when you get in urban areas or tunnels where satellite coverage is poor, the system can still "calculate" where you are by direction of travel and speed. I am surprised however that if these things are not connected the unit doesn't work.
A GPS doesn't need these things to work. I guess the factory unit does based on the problems reported.
Glad to hear it worked out OK, and thanks for the learning experience about the system.

I'm having the same issues with my Nav Unit....the "north" arrow goes crazy and the turn by turn directions seem backwards at times. I have a 2007 Base Coupe which has the speed sensor already wired, but does not have the reverse sense wire. How do you enter calibration mode?
I took my stereo out of the dash (again) and pulled the antenna out and layed it up on the dash board (out in the open) just to see if that would make a difference. It did!!! I've come to the conclusion that the antenna's must not be all that powerful if so many people are having similar problems.

Alternatively "repeaters" are sold that relay the signal received from an external antenna to your internal one for cases where a direct wire connection is not possible.
