Installing some Audio equipment-questions
Wanted to get a new head unit/stereo/cd player whatever you want to call it that'll directly input to my ipod. On the cructhfield website, it says you have to but an aftermarket amp and a low pass crossover if I want to keep my factory subs when I added my head unit to the cart. Would it be cheaper just to buy $130 aftermarket subs to put in the trunk to avoid buying the crossover and amp? It ends up costing about $100 for the crossover plus another 100 for the wiring kit and then 30 for the crossover. Could you buy the subwoofer without the crossover and amp or would you need them anyways? I wanted to spend no more than 350 on everything....is this possible?
As far as I know.. from installing a Pioneer DEH-4800MP / Harman Kardon Drive + Play / iPod in my Crossfire.. you do not need to do this.
The subs (although however bad they may suck) work on my Pioneer headunit, and all I used was the Scosche harness that came with it from Crutchfield.
ps. you also will not need to run new speaker wire from the tweeter / front speakers / subwoofers as noted in crutchfield.

Alpine IDA-X001
Alpine iDA-X200
Pioneer DEH-P7000BT

I've been reading the posts on this forum before and since buying my xfire last week. In fact, I've read them all. From what everyone here is saying, I've concluded that the warning message from Crutchfield is BS. I chatted online with a Crutchfield sales rep the other night and he was absolutely clueless. I suspect that Crutchfield is feeding us whatever bull their supplier is feeding them.
Why would there be an after market adaptor to plug into our factory wiring if you had to rewire it? Wouldn't you just connect the after market unit to the new wires? Crutchfield's claim just doesn't make sense.

I won't be buying this until the spring (espiecally since almost all of the head units I want are out of stock anyway) So I didn't feel like contacting crutchfield.
I do not believe that Crutchfield is trying to trick you into buying speaker wire / rewiring your system, I just think that they made a mistake and do not know any better. I do not believe Crutchfield to be that kind of company. I think they are honest, reliable, and have fantastic deals.

This is what it says when I try and add the head unit to my cart:
What you need to know:
- The harness does not supply connections for the front speakers, so you will need to run new speaker wires to your front speakers.
- The harness does not supply connections for the rear speakers, so you will need to run new speaker wires to your rear speakers.
- When used in this vehicle, the functions of the yellow and red wires in the Crutchfield harness are reversed. The yellow wire supplies ignition power, and the Red wire supplies constant power.
- You will need to bypass your factory amp by running new speaker wires from the radio to the amp location and splicing the new speaker wires to the factory speaker wires at the output side of the amp.
- If you replace your factory radio, you will need to use an aftermarket amplifier with a low-pass crossover to retain the factory subwoofers.

In my Base roadster there isn't the complexity, but other than changing the two power wires, everything else connected correctly right through the wiring harness when I hooked up my Pioneer MP4800.
This is the only part of the Crutchfield warnings that really applies:

Louie, I've been down this road. And I can assure you that all you need to buy is the head unit and the wiring harness (about $20). Don't let Crutchfield or an audio installer tell you different. Apparently they get their info from the same database which has wrong info in it.

I switched my oem to a PANASONIC CQC7105U In-Dash Player.
