Default Stock Stereo Amp question concerning Pre-amp

I've been wanting to change my car audio speakers for some time now, and I've decided on Pioneer for my speaker system change. I'm getting 2x12" shallow subs for my car from a friend and I'm hoping they'll fit in the compartment behind the seats where the other speakers are mounted, I think the gas tank is in that compartment but I'm not sure. Can anyone clarify this for me? also, the subs have a mounting depth of 3-1/4", so I think they'll fit back there, if not then they're going in the rear compartment. http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PU...low/TS-SW1241D these are the subs I'm planning on mounting. The minimum on them is 350-watts a piece, and I dont know if or think that the stereo amp that came with my crossfire will sustain them. I figured I needed to get a 800-1000W range amp for them. But I dont know if the stock stereo has a pre-amp feature - I'm pretty sure it does but I don't know for sure and I'm not going to rip out my stereo to check. I'm not really a car tech guy and I'm going to have it installed professionally, but some opinions and information about this subject would be most appreciated!

I'm not totally sure on this, but I think you're kinda screwed on the speaker installation behind the seats. There's very little wiggle room there, and I believe 12" will be too big. I think it's a 9" in there now.

However, several folks have successfully mounted them in the trunk area. The setup I like the best is user FritzAuf. He made a custom box for the trunk that sits on the sloped portion of the trunk facing the rear. His looks like it came with the car, and is a perfect fit. He also had enough room in the cabinet to stow some minor detailing gear, so it isn't rolling around the trunk.

Try dropping him a PM, he might be able to help you out.

yeah, I was planning on fitting them on that sloped section if I couldnt fit it behind the seats. That was my second choice to it - I'm not too happy with the subs/speakers provided and used to own an '03 Thunderbird with a Bose system, you could hear a pin drop with those speakers. I've also had some rattle problems with the right door when driving even with audio off - so I think my speaker needs to be tightened down on that side which is my best guess as to why. I'll have to look up that user/send him a pm about how he constructed the enclosure and what speakers he used. Thanks for the contact info/advice!

If you get an answer on the wedge box, from Fritz will you post it? I have basically lost my whole cargo area due to a ported box change. When I looked at them first the stereo shop had a smaller box, that would slide over to one side of the trunk. Now I'm stuck with one that sits basically right in the middle. granted I didn't buy the car for storage. Thanks, chris

Damn, sucks about your Cobra getting wrecked by a DD. A very beautiful car : (

but on the note of the box, I sent him a PM and I'll post his response once I get it

the guy hit me at a red light, I was stopped, and he slammed into me going atleast 50mph. it was hard enough to pin my rear tires between the fenders. In a f150 4x4 4 door. No insurance, and was hispanic

The area behind the seats isn't going to have enough room for those speakers - the gas tank is in there. Don't go drilling...

Your factory amp won't support the subs. You will need a separate amp, run directly from the battery with its own fuse at the battery and inside the car. You might expect to need to upgrade your charging/power system/battery.

As others have suggested, the rear cargo area is probably your only option for the speakers.

I have added a yellow top to my system, and it still isn't enough. I still need to change out two of the big three wires though. It sucks that we can't just purchase a bigger alternator.

well, that's European engineering for you. Kinda surprised they got a six speaker system working with a 240 watt nominal amp. Anyone know what the minimum for the stock speakers/subs is by any chance? And as an update I called the guys at Creative Acoustics custom to look at my stuff and I'm stopping by on Monday. Of course, that would run my steep for the cost.. I know how to build a box, but I still haven't gotten a message from Fritz yet.. I'll check my PM's again

Here's a photo of my Sub box. I've got two 8" KLIPSCH Subs installed and two way rear speakers on each end with base ports. I installed an Alpine IVA-D310 Audio / Video system and it sounds real good IMO. I kept the existing Amp with stock speaker and sub system and added an Alpine four channel amp to handle the additional rear subs and left / right rear speakers for the full surround effect. This is plenty for the size of this car (makes my hair dance).

There are more photos in my User Gallery. As you can see, the box doesn't take much space from the original cargo area.

Peace... Fritz
