This is a little off topic, but still automotive and somewhat Crossfire related.

I have a 1982 Corvette project car I am working on. I love the automatic spoiler on my xfire and I am wanting to integrate something similar as I customize the Vette.

I plan to use a wing like this one and have it either simply raise up, or preferably cantilever up like our Crossfire spoilers.



I am hoping to score a Crossfire spoiler assembly from a junkyard car. The mechanical part I think I can conquer, my problem is getting a dry contact or other signal that I can use to control a relay to raise and lower the wing at 60mph and 20mph respectively.

Is anyone aware of a device such as a wheel sensor that I could install to give a signal at a preset or adjustable speed that I could use to trigger my wing actuators?

 

Don't know anything about the wing but I hope you changed the engine because everyone knows you can't do much in the way of power with that crappy fuel injection system they used that year. And 1984 as well. That cross-port injection was the pits.

Yeah, I updated it to an LT1 with Tuned Port, I am hoping the engine computer has a VSS wire that I could somehow rig the wing from...

This is actually a car I bought back in 1999, went eyeball deep on a customization project, then my Internet company crashed and burned and it has been mothballed, just finally getting back to work on it. Sad thing is, it has sat so long I will have to basically start over and hope and pray that brand new crate engine isn't seized.

At the time I was going to paint it House of Kolor Kameleon (I know, I know, it was all the rage in 1999)..so I had the frame painted this Gawd Awful blue... going to strip it completely down and go with a silver or black probably.

Good luck with the Vette. I gave my ex my 2001 C5 in the divorce. Along with the house. Was worth it to be out of there.

Pioneer made a device that does exactly what you want. The problem is that it was discontinued, and for my way of thinking, was kind of clunky anyway:

Highly accurate distance calibration

You might be better off using an ABS sensor/clock ring (or the signal off the existing unit?) but you're going to have fun figuring out how to trigger the activation of the lift motor...

The wiring of the components for the Crossfire are documented but not to the circuit level.

I would use an rpm switch for like MSD or such and tie it into the tranny if your manual.

If not Id get an air pressure switch which could be a micro switch fitted with a small metal sail or buy the little box air pressure switch which are adjustable for HOME A/C controls ( air pressure control switch). Low pressure but thats a lot of work in any event. Might go for a gear switch like high is up?? Simple and effective. You can then get a time delay control that keeps it from jumping around.

I wanted to do this to my crossfire srt so that when I was above like 50, the wing stands up for braking like old Phil Hill in the chapparell which also proves I cant spell. Dynamic braking and some new super cars do that too now.

Thanks! That may just do it, but it doesn't work exactly like I had in mind since it has only one speed setting. The GX1 model with the switch is cool. With this, when you hit whatever speed you set, the spoiler would come up, then go down as soon as you fell below that speed, unlike our Crossfires which go up once you hit the speed, but stay up until you hit a lower speed.

In order to get the same action as the crossfire, I did find this gadget for truck tailgates called a jsc droptail.

It opens the tailgate partially at 55 and closes it at 25, and needs the signal from the VSS wire which I won't have on my older Vette. However, a combination of this unit with a different actuator (have to call and see if they would sell me just the electronics) and the Pioneer unit mentioned above that generates a vss signal.. would be the ticket. It looks like quite a number of different manufacturers make these..

So, to really make this work and look as I have envisioned, I would need the spoiler mechanism from a fallen Crossfire, the speed pulse generator and the electronics from the droptail unit.

 

Watch the video for the installation of the DropTail... The installer takes a hand drill, puts it on the rail of the pickup, pointing it straight at his chest, and starts drilling toward himself. He does it twice. One slip of the bit and he'd have a hell of an injury. The device is interesting but some of the engineering (attachment point to tailgate) is dubious.

 

That is pretty funny with the drill
