Default Radio Controls Lock Up

I tried a search to see if someone else has had this problem but came up empty. Today all the controls on my radio locked up- nothing worked. Radio was playing at the time and I was unable to shut it off. I hoped that after I shut down the car and left it alone, after 10 minutes or so the computer would shut off the power to the radio (just as it will shut off interior lights if you leave a door open) and sure enough, it did just that.

The radio is now back to normal and working properly. Anyone else have this problem? Is it a bad omen of problems to come?

BTW, this is the stock radio with GPS.

Any input very much appreciated.

I had the same problem. It was very annoying. It worked some days and the next day it would freeze up and wouldn't do anything. I just replaced it with a new Blaupunkt MP48. It's a plug and play with no wiring needed. It sells for less than a hundred dollars and sounds great. I had to cut the phone mute line of the harness. It has all types of tone adjustments and a color adjustable display. You mix the RGB color to fit your own taste.

I had the same problem quite a bit when i first had the car.Sometimes some buttons would freeze, other times all the buttons and ***** would freeze making the unit totally unusable.Even switching the ignition off and on again would not solve the problem.I have now found that if i give the lcd display a gentle tap it all comes back to life.

Sometimes when I swap out a CD for a new one the head unit locks up. I'm always able to power it off and on again which clears up the issue. Happens about once a week and I go through a lot of CDs. Head unit is on my list for replacement.

Same problem last night, in the SRT, very annoying. After 10 mins. the HU re-started on it's own and all appears to be well again. I now have a problem in the Limited. On low volumes the Drivers' side speaker goes dead and only the tweeter works. If I turn up the volume, say above 17 then the speaker kicks in again. Any ideas? And yes I have the factory nav units in both cars.

I know this is an old thread, but I experienced the same problem today when the wife & I decided to take a short drive in the coupe. Radio played (OEM unit w/o NAV) but none of the controls worked. Just got back a few minutes ago & I will see if the radio will reset itself after the power is off for awhile. Really strange; first-time phenomena after 12+ years of ownership.

Fellow Owners,

On 15 April 2021 I started my 2008 Crossfire engine to circulate the oil and refrigerant after being away from home for a time. Turned on the Infinity AM/FM radio/with CD and GPS. For the first time after 9 years of ownership I was unable to change the FM stations using the preset buttons under the display, but the other functional buttons on the front seemed to work OK as intended. Then on 18 April I thought I'd start up my Crossfire to checkout the Infinity radio again to see if perhaps it reset itself and discovered the only functional buttons that worked were the on/off switch, CD remove, and radio scanner as part of the tuner ****. The FM stereo radio sounded just fine, its just that all the other functional buttons were froze up and the green power light in the lower left corner wouldn't illuminate. Since then I have read this string of problems, and I hope that it is merely a matter of resetting the digital radio. My 3 year old Interstate battery has developed a leak so I've been checking it's voltage frequently. I have a feeling that based on your string of emails, a reset by disconnecting the battery might be the best resolution. The Infinity radio has always worked fine before. I sure would miss it if it died out. Oddly enough, my circa 1979 multi-band analog house radio was having problems too on the 15th, but it has come back to acting like it is suppose to. A good friend of mine told me that the solar activity and flares have been very highly lately, so perhaps the high E-M fields and particles emitted from the sun have changed some electrical states in the radios.

Speaking as a 35 year electronics tech, former Field Applications Engineer for JVCKenwood and 40 year Ham Radio operator: no. First of all, E-M fields from the sun THAT strong are essentially impossible.

Second, (and this has been the case for several years) K7RA reports a very quiet sun, in keeping with the current sunspot minimum.
Read about it here:

As to what is going on, your radio is over twelve years old. You can pull the battery cable off for 1/2 minute, if that resets things fine. Otherwise, it is way past time to get a new AM/FM head. Once you hear the audio from the modern heads, you won't miss that old thing at all. I speak from experience here, my $85 JVC head outperform the crappy, two channel POS unit that came with our cars to the point that I can't stand listening to a Crossfire with factory sound.

I heard about those solar flares and being naturally cautious I made myself an aluminum beanie. When l go outside I wear it, a Covid mask and one of those aluminum emergency blankets. I stay inside the house when there is lightning around. My motto is you can never be too careful.

Hey, All,
I'm reporting the same problem with my ‘04 Base. The stock radio wouldn’t allow me to select the settings to change the treble and bass. I installed the Blaupunkt Fresno 421 for its bare bones no frills Bluetooth/radio options. It worked fine. Then I started the car again, and no longer have those options like the stock radio. Weird!

would replacing the fuses under the hood work? …they are original after all.

anyone solve this issue?

thanks, community!

I just disconnected the negative cable on the battery for about 30 minutes & re-connected it. Nothing changed on the OEM Infinity car radio. Just time for me to install the Pyle unit I bought.

Probably will go ahead & perform the HVAC control module repair that CL770 told us about. I've been putting that off for awhile
