Rear Speaker Clarification
I did a search and read everything there is here, and I just want to make sure I'm clear.
I have a base 05. There are no rear speakers.
From what I can tell, none of the other models have rear speakers, just rear subs. Is that correct?
I have seen speaker company references saying the XF has 6.5" rear speakers.
Has anyone put 6.5" speakers in the rear openings?
Would the base model have the wiring & openings already there?

I don't quite know what you are asking, but I THINK I answered the question anyway!

NO TAPE MEASURE in this whole house (I just divorced and moved)... looks like oval 6x4 inchers or about that.
They are driven by the amp as sub-woofers, I believe. Rcompart is the guy to ask. I'd PM him if I were you.

I'm glad he actually took it out and looked at it, I can see mine but haven't cared to replace them. They're a 6.5" sub normally. The question would be if the base models still have the housing in there, just no subs....which I'm guessing to be the case. In order to get to the subs "cleanly" it's fairly simple. Remove your interior trim in the rear (it takes quite a bit of tugging, but be careful....i'd also get some interior push clips from napa/autozone before you start, as you'll break at least one) and at this point you'll see a large magnesium plate covering your fuel tank. remove the plate, and move the sound deadening that's around your fuel tank... The housing/subs should be right there in plain sight. If you can't see them then you'd be better off putting a sub in the trunk the ol' fashioned way in my opinion. As stated in the thread linked above, the bazooka subs are a direct bolt-in, so assuming that the limited and base use the same amp (stands to reason), the wiring might already be there anyways. Just take a peek and see if you have it set up, but just need subs, car companies won't want to pay for too many variations. If they can (and yes they surely can) have base and limited models made the exact same, but simply forget a $100 pair of subs, and charge an extra grand for it, they will.
In summary, remove your trim, and see if you have the:
Housing
Wiring
Same amp as a limited/srt
if you have all of those, buy the bazookas, plug in (spade connectors are already there) and enjoy. If you don't have all three, then just go the old fashioned route. If you have any questions or need to make sure that you have the same amp, either do a search for pics of it, or drop me a pm, i'll give you my number and you can give me a call.

I too wonder what the Special Edition (which is a glorified Base Roadster) has in it in the way of amp and wiring. But then, no I don't really care: I'm gonna find a Limited Roadster with a stick and have what I want... a limited roadster with a stick - not a base/SE roadster with a stick.
But it will be interesting to see what everyone determines is in the base cars in the way of wires and amp.
I'm actually skipping the subs. I haven't looked under the seat, but I'm pretty sure there's no amp in my base XF.
The stock stereo works fine with the windows up. At 90+ mph with the windows down, it doesn't work so well. Looking at a better stereo with Bluetooth so I can play the tunes from my Droid on the stereo (no more skipping CD's). I'll replace the stock component speakers in the door with a better pair, add another set of 2 or 3 ways behind the seats (not subs). That may be fine. If not, I can add an amp and sub in the trunk later.

The stock amp is under the carpet in the passenger side. Pull the carpet down in the footwell and you'll see some Styrofoam. pull that out and you'll find a metal plate, unbolt it, and if you have one, your amp will be staring you in a the face.
anyone got a picture of the factoy sub mounted.. im considering pulling the 6.5" woofers out and replace them with 8" subs.. if there is enough space might be worth it (kicker mids) would be a cheap upgrade if enough space (might need to fibreglass some boxes)
will be worth the effort it it means you can keep you "big" boot

but if i do ditch the factory housing and just make a fibreglass mouding and mould in a 8" sub box.
depending how much space i have i might be able to fit in 10" woofers..
otherwise just unhook them and put in moulded boxes in the boot and have dual 12's
