Hi All -
A while back I was looking into replacing my amp, and got some helpful info. from this group. It seems as though the popular Alpine amp was the PDX 4.1 or 4.5. There's also the PDX-F4. I am not an audiophile, and don't know much about these things, but want to get this fixed over the winter so that I'll be ready come spring. I'm going with the stock system and just replacing the amp - so which is better? These amps apparently will fit in the stock location without an overheating problem, so that all works. But what is the best amp for the buck? PDX 1, 4.1, 4.15, and what is the difference with a PDX-F4? I appreciate any help that comes my way.

What will you gain by changing the amp but keeping the stock head unit ?

Good question, & damned if I know other than the current factory amp seems to be fried - it needs to be replaced & the other components don't. What would you suggest?

 

Oh, I thought you were doing some form of upgrade to get more out of the stock system.

If you have to go to the trouble of installing a new amp, you may want to consider a new head unit at the same time. A properly set-up system would sound amazing.

 

Well, I'm open to suggestions, but don't want to re-invent any wheels. So if forum members have done some things that they're happy with within the confines of the factory applications (I don't want to relocate amps or build speaker boxes) then I'd like to hear them.

The factory amplifier has DSP crossovers and equalization. If you don't get another factory amplifier you should plan on a DSP amplifier with similar capabilities and plan on tuning it.

I'm shying away from the factory amp because they seem to have a history of failure. I don't see the point of replacing something bad with something that may have the same problem. But I really don't know much about these stereo systems. I am trying to learn, though.
