Default Stereo and Trim removal?

I went to my local Stereo place (Car toys) to have them pop the Stereo with the keys, and non of the keys they have work. They tried VW, Merc, BMW, everything in the set, nothing would grab. Anyone else have this problem, or is the Becker set that "special"?

My assumption is once the Stereo comes out you can access some screws or clips to remove the trim from around the rest of the console (A/C controls, control button group, silver trim) area? Can someone confirm that, don't want to pry something and break the trim.

Thanks

Mercedes Radio Keys work. Make sure you have the turned the right direction. I think the hook goes outward.

CyberGreg once posted in this thread on page 2 a picture of a universal removing tool. But I think your dealer should be able to order the 'Radio Removing Tool'. Ask him to check in his service manual.

That is the same keys I used. Maybe they tried to stick something else in there prior and bent the catches inside.

Well, if that's the case ... good luck!!!

This happened to me once in a former car. I had to remove almost the whole trim to access the radio from behind, bend/brake the radio casing retainers. Awful work!

The Becker manual has a good guide, here's some pictures...

After inserting the tool you have to pull away from the radio like toward the doors. This compresses the spring clips holding the head unit in.

Yes, you will break stuff if you don't remove the head unit first. There are at least 4 screws (from memory), two just under the A/C controls (behind the head unit) and two in the upper vents. You have to remove the vents first.

I got keys, wiring adaptor and antenna adaptor from crutchfield for free, when i ordered my new headunit. The keys came with instructions, slid keys in radio and it came out, took 10 sec. Kinda scary actually.

Good luck.

I believe the VW keys work as well. Becker makes a lot of stereos for german cars.

I got the keys from Crutchfield for $15...rip-off, but they did the job. And yes, the VW keys do work.

Thanks. I called Becker, ordered the keys, $7.36 including shipping/handling. 3 days later radio is out. Who knows, maybe we didn't push the other keys in all the way, but the Becker keys took all of a few seconds.

It took my stereo guy no more than a minute to completely remove the stock HU. Pop the keys in and unplug the wires and its DONE!
