Default Single Din head unit with screen on a budget

Hi everyone!

Trying to find a decent head unit that either has a display built in or has one of those pop out displays so I can use my backup cam.
I am not looking to spend $1000 on it but I'd love to have better sound than the OEM Becker head unit and I'd like to find something that at least looks good.

Seen a few "pop out" stereos that cover the climate control which isn't ideal so I wonder if there are any that either have a smaller screen or pop down instead of pop up so to speak.

Would love to hear what you think is a good setup for our cars!

Check this out. https://www.joyingauto.com/joying-an...5ghz-wifi.html. Joying has been the highest rated of the the Chinese Android units. I have their 9” unit with the Android 9 firmware, fit to the AOZ kit. Pretty tidy install. Might upgrade to their Android 10 unit or just go with an iPad install instead. We’ll see. Hope this helps.

This is not a flip out radio I assume right? Could you take a picture of your dash so I can see what button it covers up? Is it annoying when you can use certain functions anymore because the screen covers them? I guess with the flip out ones you could at least slide it in so as to access the controls of our dashboard.

Also, did this require the adapter harness and antenna adapter? Thanks for your help!

I’m hoping to upgrade my stereo soon. I see that this supports Android, but, is there one comparable that works with Apple?

I think they all support apple play also.

My issue is, I don't like that they cover up the controls (function buttons as well as climate control).
The guy I purchased the car from had a non functioning jvc kd-av300 installed. It's a single Din but actually has a small screen installed in it for the backup camera. It's not big, but it does the trick. Unfortunately his stereo unit didn't work for music anymore for some reason.
JVC also made a few units that look just like it, with a small screen that features Bluetooth, Android play etc only issue all of them are discontinued unfortunately and haven't been able to find one on eBay.
There is Chinese head units on ebay for less than $100 that are single Din and the whole head unit is basically a small screen I just read the quality of those and. I don't want the sound to be worse that what it is right now.
But also would hate to miss out on the already installed backup cam.

Sounds like you need to decide exactly what you need vs. what you have found so far. Have you made sure/are you positive (the) wiring is intact (so that) whatever you do decide on, that it will work? Good luck!

For how I got the head unit back in and works fine...If I can't find a single Din with a little screen (like the JVC that was in the car but doesn't function) I think I could settle for one of those pop out screens. Just need to find one that doesn't cost an arm and a left and still has great sound quality.

What do you currently run yourself?

I run the OEM nav radio, I don't have a need to have a loud radio (like to be able to hear what's happening 360 degrees around me just in case) so the OEM is fine. The only thing I did was do the 'bang-for-the-buck' speaker wires capacitor mod in the two doors. That was a great mod, super inexpensive, and it made for a more pleasant listening experience when I would turn up the volume. Good luck with your search!

Speaking of the nav radio, anyone know if the GPS map system was ever updated (nav disks)? Quite a few years ago, ppl were talking about seeing if that disk set could be updated to a more current roadway systems (new road construction and satellite error corrections?). I'm not positive but I don't think the original radios nav system did any satellite position corrections... .

OEM Nav discs were never updated. I still have a set NIB unopened.

I got three sets, Two OEM, one OEM new in its shrink-wrap from an ebay seller (I had wondered where he got the entire package and disks but, oh well) that he had listed/sold on ebay (that the dealership reimbursed me for as part of the original new car sale, took a few months for me to find it, the dealership followed through and sent me a check for the total amount). I got the software here in the forum before I found that ebay seller (and) made two sets. I am pretty sure I can find the three that isn't in the car (OEM and two copies) but where they are is anyone's guess right now...

I fitted a flip-out 8" Android touch screen stereo, in a previous vehicle. It was a Single DIN unit.
You do have to observe the location you want to install it to, as once that screen flips out and sits up vertically, it WILL partially cover up the controls / dials / air vents, that are positioned above the Stereo in your centre console.

Being an Android unit you weren't limited to the pre-installed features. You had access on the Stereo to the Android APP Store and could download a replacement DAB Player, or GPS App, or anything else you wanted.
I did also it hooked up to a rear / reverse camera. Along with OBD2, DAB, worked nicely.

Can pickup something like this on EBay cheaper than the premium brand options. Most are "generic" chinese units. Better ones branded as Joying, Pumpkin, etc...

I ended up rolling with a BOSS 7" floating display. The screen is always there but big enough to see the rear view camera screen well and small enough to be able to use all buttons and climate control wheels without any issues. It is adjustable for height and can be tilted in all directions.
Love it so far as it does everything I wanted. Sound quality is great (w/ the biggest bang for your buck mod) and I enjoy the Android play functionality of using my phone’s GPS through the screen. I need to spend a little bit more time on functions and a-ps I can download and control through the head unit.
It comes with a microphone which is -effect for making and taking calls without ever having to take your hands off the steering wheel. All functions are voice activated so you send messages or call people by simply issuing voice commands. Definitely very happy with it so far and it was on sale for $199 which is perfect for what it is and what it does.

Put in the oven over a suitably shaped form at around 350 to 400F they make great little shiny flower pots. 😉
