Hi,
These cars really need a rear camera. .
Now that there are so many Dash cameras available, has anyone simply installed a wifi dash camera rear facing and used their phone as the montior?
That way not touching the original interior etc. ?
Good idea, removes a requirement for Video cable wiring, but how will you power it? Still need to route power, tapped into some electrical source?
I did it the long (proper) way with leads. It was very difficult getting the Camera wiring to route via the same grommet in the tailgate, that the factory wiring uses, from the car! But worth it in the end.
Also for reference, the rear camera you'd want it positioned along the top of the rear window somewhere - because at the bottom, once that Spoiler opens up, you'll lose alot of visibility (on a Coupe)!
Edit: Another better option perhaps, one of those rear cameras integrated into the rear license plate holder. That way you get clear visibility FROM the back of the car (rather than the view from inside).

I am sure I could route a power cable somewhere on the inside, nice and neat.
I saw one that is made to go directly into to the license plate light though as well. It has to be hard wired in and then run to a monitor though...too bad it isn't wifi.

You can get wireless units, both camera and monitor need power but there is no wire running between them. The monitor and camera are powered from an ignition controlled source, there is one on the light switch for the monitor and the camera is powered from a ignition powered source. If you have daytime running lights you use this.
Having the camera in the car will give you poor visibility of the outside.
I mounted my camera between the hatch opener and the license plate light and ran the wire through a small grommeted hole I drilled beside the camera. The wires go up through the rubber grommet at the top of the hatch and out into the trunk behind the top and bottom trunk liners. The power comes from my daytime running lights.

Ok! Yes that's another option. Neat solution, just replaces an existing number plate light lense.
I've often found with these small reverse cameras, in daylight the image is adequate, but they are exceptionally poor at night time. Almost an unusable image, when reversing. Performance may vary!
(problem is the advert images and text all look great. But it's only when you actually have set it up and use it..................... )
I doubt it, our cars have a flat 'tab' that doesn't leave much room to have something mounted on it which allows the 'swing' needed to unlatch. Who knows though, until someone actually buys it and tries to fit it...?
New to forum and my SRT-6. Going to need a backup camera.. I think I want a wireless to the rear view mirror. Anyone done this? Can I pick up the needed 12v from the overhead light I't??? I've heard that you should turn off all accessories when turning off the car....this sounds awfully inconvenient??? Also, I can't figure out how to post a new thread...?? Might be a little on the slow side here. thanks soho

Go hardwired. You’re going to pay out the nose for any kind of “HD” wireless backup camera and you’re still not getting close to 720p. There’s quite a few no name companies that are using Sony lenses for 20-30$ on eBay. That’s my 2 cents.
Attach a wire to one of the back up light leads and run it to the camera's control. The camera will now be powered whenever the transmission is placed in reverse. I do not know how large the camera's control and wifi generator are but assume they are small and can be mounted somewhere behind the trunk panel. A lead can then be run out to the camera mounted in the license plate area.
I have a few back up camera kits ,when i put mine in wire type i kept getting deals on and wound up with 3
if u us the wire type the wires go from under the carpet in the pass footwell down the inside of the door when u get to the passway to the rear u will find a 3" passway into the trunk where u connect the backup light and ground , now back to the front run your wired under the dash to the window to the headliner then over to the center and to the back up camera or video feed. it is simple and it works no drilling Oh u have a hole ,just above your license plate already there for the wires to go out . I am under thw weather right now but in a few days i will look and post pictures of what i have ,,,, you u can have one or if only one person wants then one can have all i have 2 set ups. no monitors,, I also have a front facing camera / mirror that my wife does not like i paid 27 for it will take 25 and i'ii pay the shipping for all ( if it all goes to one person.
jim
OK i found two camera's with wiring harness NO MONITORS if u have back up stuff and your camera stoped working this is for u here r the pictures one in the box maybe the correct box maybe not and the other out of a box. jim
could not find the front facing camera did find a compass within a mirror std mount to glass if someone wants it i can make u a hella of a deal fits almost all new cars

Haven't seen any info on mirror mounting??? I think it is safe to assume no mirror will use the same mounting bracket. Does a new bracket have to be mounted to windshield glass....does existing bracket have to be removed?? If so, hot do you do that?? thx
