Default Synthetic Oil Recommendation

Hi everyone
The XF recommends 0W-40 Mobil 1. What are you all using? I really need some feedback on this. Personally, I want to use the 0W-40 from Mobil 1, but my husband seems to feel that particular weight isn't necessarily needed. What do you all use as your synthetic?

Thanks!

Cissy, I think they recommend the 0w40 weight oil to accommodate the close tolerances of the Mercedes engine. You can find the oil at Walmart, and Auto Zone. IMO, I think it's good to go with what the factory recommends, if for no other reason than warranty concerns.

Thanks, Mike! I agree. BTW, from what I read here, the oil filter is hard to find other than a dealer? At what cost? Also, Mike, do you change the oil yourself? Can it be done just by putting the front up on ramps like I do my Miata or is there some other way that is best? I read somewhere here on the forum just how it's done, but I cannot find it now.

Thanks!

P.S. I found the post about changing the oil yourself...Mike, you wrote it LOL. Thanks!

I use the Mobil1 0W-40 exclusively, and I will venture to say that just about everyone else is probably doing the same. This oil weight it not a common weight, but it is readily available at the auto parts stores.

Trying to outguess the factory specified oil is not something I would recommend. Sure, you can analyze the weights available and temperature range your engine will experience and maybe come up with a weight that seems better suited, but it just ends up being a guess since we weren't there during the engine development. You should just stick with the factory specified.

I believe that the 0w-40 is a thinner oil than most available and it has probably been specified because of the tolerances of the MB engine…in fact using a thicker oil (which is probably most of them) would not be a good thing!

I change my oil using a vacuum pump canister system called the Topsider. With this, changing the oil in the Crossfire is a real joy.

Here is a website explaining how to do it...I got the idea from somewhere on this site:

As I said in my other post, it really is a piece of cake. Much easier than the Miata. Bottom cover comes off alot quicker too. So far I've changed mine 3 times already, and I haven't spilled a drop. (that's a record for me).
