I filled up for $2.89/gal here in Richmond. I saw a thing on the news over the weekend where Ford said that Americans will continue to drive their SUVs even if gas hits $4.00/gal. I hope they're not foreshadowing anything. . .

I'll say it again but it's about the same price as then (60s-70s) because of inflation over the past 40 years does anyone have a calculator?
Just move the decimal point in your head or don't wear your glasses!

therefore, it is true that the banks, benefiting from the monetary policy of the frb and government, are ripping you off much more than exxon ever could hope to.

Here's a good comparison of "inflation adjusted" gasoline prices.
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/gas-price1.htm
Note that 2006 is the highest by a few cents/gal over 1980. 1981 had the highest prices ever, with the exception of the days immediately following katrina, but we are approaching that level right now. So by government statistics, gas does look like it's getting to be expensive.
But when you consider the point regarding true inflation numbers I make above in a reply to one of Andrew's posts, gas is still not historically that expensive.
It's funny how people will cheer for one thing like house price appreciation because it appears to benefit them but then think there is some conspiracy because the price of something else like oil that they consume goes up in price. The government can take both the credit and the blame.
You should all consider yourselves lucky that fuel is so cheap you can run cars that I can only dream about running.
Petrol here in N Ireland costs $6.59 per US gallon, and it costs me over $61.00 everytime I fill up my lousy 1600 Nissan Primera for the week.
I can afford the car, but the insurance and running costs are so high that I can't afford them, so it would have to be a week-end car, and I am not in the happy position of being able to afford one of them just yet.

Yikes...Irish...if it was that much here I wouldn't own a Crossfire either but rather something that gets alot of mpg. I know after what you said our gas seems cheap but for some reason it still seems expensive even if we are at less then half your price. Being one of the crazies here in the states who owns an SUV I guess I shouldn't talk should I?
I'm seeing very high 2's here in Central Florida, I've even seen a few at just over $3. When you drive past the car lots and the dealers are lining up the big SUV's and full size trucks, it's no wonder we have to depend on the world for our oil. They push these land whales that get 13-15 a gal on a good day, like it's the only thing they have to sell. I can't believe that in this day and age that every dealer doesn't have at least one car that gets over 40 MPG. I was going to sell my Jetta TDI now that I have my Crossfire, but I'm planning on keeping it to use as my daily driver and taxi for the kids to go to school in. I believe that until the car companies start providing us with more diesels, the dependency on foreign oil will only increase. I know we are a country of excess, but if you can't afford the gas for those over sized monsters, buy something more manageable and quit you crying about dropping $80-90 for a tank of gas. This isn't meant to be directed towards anyone on the site, just my personal thoughts and a short rant.

Seems like there were times in the 60's when you would get a gas war between stations and for a day or so it may have dropped into the 29.9 per gallon.
Dan, I'm to lazy to calculate the inflation but I've a feeling you are probably right on track!

Northwest area of Illinois (Orion). Just filled up my black "04" limited today... premium was $2.86. Cost me $36.00 to fill up...ugh! Car is so worth it though. The looks my baby gets are "priceless".
Early last week 91RON unleaded was $112.9 AU per litre. Thursday went to 129.9 AU per litre. Today, Tuesday, it is $119.9 AU per litre. $1 AU = $0.73 US and 4 litres +app 1 US gal. On top of this the Queensland State Govt. subsidizes fuel by $0.08 per litre so we get it cheaper than the other Australian States. Petrol prices can change 3-4 times each day. Usually jumps up $0.13 to $0.20 then eases back at $0.005 to $0.01 increments over a few days.
we are in for a real treat this week...
yesterday an all time US record set per barrel... now over the $70 mark.
i would guess a .10 - .15 increase per gallon in the next day or so at the pump.
fill up today... if its not too late.
